United Refreshes Economy BOB Menu

Matthew Klint Posted onJanuary 3, 2017November 14, 2023 12 Comments

Each month United tinkers with its buy-on-board menu, offering a “Snack Shop” on all flights over two hours and a “Bistro on Board” for flights over 3.5 hours.

This month, one of my favorites is back — cheeseburgers! I know, I know: the visualization of an airline cheeseburger may not be pretty, but United has historically pulled off cheeseburgers very well in both business and economy class.

The cheeseburger will cost $11.99 and is “served with a pretzel bun, lettuce, tomato, pickles and a side of French fry chips”.

This items will replace the roast beef sandwich, which was tasty but seemed to get soggy when cooked in the oven.

Maybe I have a constant craving for hamburgers because I am on a strict diet at home, but I hope I happen to be on a flight this month that has them. (I am not so desperate that I will book a flight just for the hamburger!)

Some other changes:

  • The rotating craft beer this month is Sam Adams (cost = $7.99)
  • The breakfast menu is changing:
    • The fruit and cheese tray and maple ham and cheese sandwich will be eliminated
    • Instead, there will be three new items:
      • Chobani Greek yogurt and fresh cut fruit, served with whole-grain oat granola (cost = $5.99)
      • Jimmy Dean egg, sausage and cheese breakfast sandwich with fresh fruit cup (cost = $9.99)
      • “Power-Start Breakfast” combo including a chicken sausage and egg skillet served with Chobani Greek yogurt and fruit (cost = $12.99)

While American Airlines and Delta Air Lines do not offer hot meals for purchase in economy class, Untied  (and Alaska) continue to offer it. I do try to eat healthy and cheaper on the ground when I can, but if I have a tight connection or get to the airport late, I greatly appreciate being able to eat more than a snack box or cold wrap on a transcontinental flight if I am not upgraded.

But, don’t you get it for free since you havc GS?

I sure wish I was Global Services, but I’m not even 1K anymore — just Gold. It is nice to have $200 in onboard credit for meal purchases and Wi-Fi that I can use during the year thanks to my AMEX Plat card.

Thanks for sharing this. Just wanted to say I really like the new blog. Also, as a United loyalist (though I’m considering free agency), I always appreciate airline-specific tidbits like this post.

        Thank you for reading Daniel!

Airline loyalty is overrated these days — I would also consider free agency.

UA is the best at buy on board thanks to its CO ovens on every mainline plane heritage and thanks for shining the spotlight.

R u sure Wifi can be a part of airline credit by Plat AMEX card? I think I tried it once and didn’t get reimbursed.

I had the Jimmy Dean breakfast sandwich a few days ago. It was not bad. It’s just that it wasn’t good. It was very processed and tasted processed too. The hot ham and cheese sandwich was much much better. Please, UA, bring back the ham and cheese sandwich.

I had the ‘new’ burger on DEN-EWR the other night, and can report back that it is quite tasty, at least as good as it was in its first BOB iteration, and definitely comparable to (or the same) as the burgers that periodically rotate through the domestic F menu. The pretzel bun is a good call, and I strongly recommend “crunchifying” the burger with a few of the included fry chips!

Before the merger, I didn’t fly CO much, but when I did, one of my guilty pleasures was the cheeseburger. Glad to see I’m not the only one!
