United’s Secret New Invite-Only Restaurant at Newark Airport

Matthew Klint Posted onAugust 22, 2017November 14, 2023 17 Comments

United may not have a Polaris Lounge yet at Newark’s Liberty International Airport, but it now has an invitation-only restaurant called Classified. Do you have access?

I don’t. You can input your MileagePlus number and last name at the address above. Most will recevie this message–

Yes, a tad ironic that you can bolster your chances of an invite by adding yourself to the mailing list.

It is all just a gimmick? Well, limey1K on Flyertalk posted the following pictures–

Curious about the menu? The full menu is here.

United’s Terminal C at Newark is run by OTG, a group that has transformed the dreary terminal into a great collection of restaurants and bars. I appreciate the new restaurants and the menu actually looks very good.

Earlier this year I tried Saison, a French bistro / steakhouse also in Terminal C.

Prices are not cheap, but I found the quality of the food to be exceptional.

a restaurant with tables and chairs

a basket of bread and butter

a scallop with greens on a white plate

a plate of food on a table

a bucket of french fries with ketchup on a plate

a cup of coffee with a spoon

a plate of dessert on a table

If the food at Classified is this good, I do think many will pay. At the same time, once the Polaris Lounge opens, premium longhaul passengers will likely opt for the “free” lounge over spending $150+ at a restaurant, especially with food onboard.

Some people complain that a restaurant with iPad menus can never be a fancy restaurant, but I like the concept of quickly ordering and being able to settle the bill quickly without having to chase down a waiter.

So how about you? Would you drop money on an airport restaurant like you would for a nice restaurant in the city? Would you be willing to eat at Classified?

Not sure what country you’re from but if that thing is supposed to be a steak, it looks bad. Good steaks are not covered in mysterious black crud, good steaks do not need sauce and good steaks are not a filet unless you’re a teenage girl. Chefs put filet on the menu specifically so people who don’t like the taste of beef and don’t understand the concept of a steak can pretend to eat a steak.

YMMV, but it was a great steak. What type of beef do you like?

Interesting… so it’s a sort-of I.O. lounge. I feel like they could have called it the something more fun like the Red Carpet Club though.

That would have been very clever.

OTG is going so well at EWR that they have now shut down a number of their establishments and are putting in old fashioned ones like Dunkin’ – with actual human interaction.

I see some benefits of iPad ordering, but the fact that you can’t turn them off nor move them is terrible IMO.

My wife and I ate there over our Xmas trip to the US. I would have to say that I wasn’t super impressed. We ordered the beef carpaccio, caesar salad and 20oz ribeye and split the meal. We also ordered a couple of drinks. The idea of ordering from an iPad is fine, but we didn’t like that there was 2 of them on our table and they stayed there. We ended up taking them off the stands and setting them to the side. I wouldn’t call that fine dining if you’re eating with a significant other staring at an iPad. Another problem with them is that we ordered 2 more drinks after closing out our initial bill and waited for them to come and finally had to ask for them. The service was OK, but not great.
The beef carpaccio was decent. The caesar salad wasn’t very good at all considering it relies mostly on the dressing and it wasn’t good. Our first steak was way overcooked, so we had to send it back. The second steak was cooked perfectly and tasted nice. Definitely the best thing we had on the menu besides the drinks. Overall, with the mixed service, not great food and non-personal dining, I’d give the experience a C+. It was cool to say we were invited, but we’re not in a hurry to go back.

it is interesting that an airport restaurant would adopt the “Studio 54” type marketing campaign. My have things changed.

I really hate what OTG has done to Newark Airport. I was invited to dine at Classified before boarding an international flight. When I checked and saw that OTG was behind this, I declined. The iPad thing in your face is, in my opinion, ghastly!

Flying UA EWR-LAS on 8 Nov ’17. I passed the audition (GS 1MM) to dine at Classified. I’ll review upon return.
