Well, so much for my weekend at home…
Tonight, United will launch its inaugural nonstop flight from Los Angeles to Singapore. It’s an important nonstop destination for LAX and underscores United’s commitment to Los Angeles as a hub.

The folks at United Airlines apparently noticed that I write about United quite often, and invited me on this trip. Yes, my first “media trip”…
<cue the SELLOUT! charges>
Let not your heart be troubled. I’ve disclosed it upfront, as I always would do. Furthermore, I have already written several United Polaris trip reports and even reviewed the 787-9 already (well, my son wrote that one…). Thus, this trip is less about providing an unbiased review (though I will do my best to do that) and more about gauging how survivable a 17hr,55min flight is, even from business class.
Upon arrival, I’ll be turning around and coming right home…I’m very busy with a new startup that does not allow me to be out of the office on Monday. And that’s a shame, considering United has a beautiful itinerary planned and Singapore is one of my favorite places…
In case your wondering, I do ask my wife for permission before I take these trips. Had she objected, I’d be happily home this weekend. I’m very thankful to her for letting me gallivant around the world and still view every blog story and every trip as an investment in our shared future.

18 hours is a long time to be anywhere. I can barely be at home for 18 hours. Good luck and enjoy!
I’m flying SFO-SIN in economy in February. RIP me. Congrats on the media invite, thats pretty cool.
Your first media trip was with Ethiopian Airlines, actually.
I’ve flown something close to 16 hrs on QR’s DOH-LAX flight in Business. Even though they have the older hard product, it is comfortable. Though close to the end of the flight you’d be happy to get out.
i expect to take this flight very often (kid is in LA, my home is in singapore) … so am looking forward to your review — although i’ve been looking forward more to the SQ non-stop and am hoping somebody (you?) reviews that soon. have a great flight!
Did the SFO-SIN trip with immediate turnaround twice in January. Since the cabin is not completely dark as it would be on any other plane (because there the FAs would insist on shades down) it was very manageable. Imagine 35 hours in a dark tube…And the SQ lounges are one of my favorites. Would do it again in a heartbeat.
