A Trio of Midnight Treats on United Airlines

Matthew Klint Posted onOctober 14, 2017November 14, 2023 3 Comments

United Airlines provides a hot snack on premium transcontinental red eye flights. Over the last couple years I’ve only been offered three variations, but all were tasty. For this week’s Meal of the Week I review a trio of midnight treats.

#1: Roast Beef Sandwich with Horseradish

This one surprised me. It looked like a dry piece of bread with several dry slices of roast beef, but it turned out to be an excellent snack. The key ingredient: horseradish. This was a very spicy sandwich, but brimming with flavor that more than compensated for the dry beef. The sun-dried tomato and artichoke in the accompanying ramekin added a nice contrast of flavors.

#2: Pepperoni and Sausage Calzone

This one is a heart attack on plate, but this delightful bomb of carbs and fat was undeniably tasty. The tangy marinara sauce and pickled pepperoncini were great accompaniments, but actually unnecessary: the cheese + pepperoni + sausage inside the calzone was more than enough.

#2: Hamburger (or Cheeseburger)

One of my favorite United meals in economy (buy on board) or on these redeye flights is the hamburger or cheeseburger. Who knows where United gets its beef from, but I’ve never had a bad hamburger. It is always a safe choice.

CONCLUSION

So which one is best? While all three were good, the hamburger is my favorite.

Have you had something different on a United transcontinental redeye?

There were reports that United had cut hot snacks on transon redeyes last month, but it seems this month the hot choices are back in the rotation.

On my last non-premium transcon red-eye (SEA-EWR), they had 2 choices: The calzone or salmon salad with raspberry acai dressing, which is similar to the lunch salad option and it’s really good as a cold option.

Matthew, you keep typing Untied (under #2). Freudian slip?

I’m only had #2 and #3. The burger is amazing!!!
