United Adds Eight New Latin America Routes

Earlier today I wrote about United’s new approach to international route planning. With many borders still closed, United is focusing on warm weather destinations that are more welcoming to American travelers. This morning it announced eight new routes, including:

  • Cleveland (CLE)
    • Cancun, Mexico (CUN) – starting December 2020
  • Denver (DEN)
    • Belize City, Belize (BZE) – starting December 2020
    • San Jose, Costa Rica (SJO) – starting December 2020
  • Los Angeles (LAX)
    • Liberia, Costa Rica (LIR) – starting January 2021
    • San Jose, Costa Rica (SJO) – starting December 2020
    • San Pedro Sula, Honduras (SAP) – starting December 2020
  • Washington D.C. (IAD)
    • Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic (SDQ) – starting December 2020
  • San Francisco (SFO)
    • Liberia, Costa Rica (LIR) – starting January 2021

Tickets for the new routes will be on sale tomorrow as early as tomorrow, though some of the new Costa Rica routes will not be available for purchase on October 21st. United describes Cleveland – Cancun as a new route, but this route has operated in years past.

United Increases Service to Warm Weather Destinations

In addition to United’s new routes, United will restart, resume, or increase routes to other destinations in Mexico, the Caribbean, and Central America.

Mexico

United will resume service between Houston and Mazatlán on Demeber 19th. It will also increase service to the following destinations:

  • Chicago (ORD)
    • Cozumel (CZM)
    • San Jose del Cabo (SJD)
    • Puerto Vallarta (PVR)
  • Denver (DEN)
    • Cancun (CUN)
    • Cozumel (CZM)
    • San Jose del Cabo (SJD)
    • Puerto Vallarta (PVR)
  • Houston (IAH)
    • Acapulco (ACA)
    • Cancun (CUN)
    • Cozumel (CZM)
    • San Jose del Cabo (SJD)
    • Puerto Vallarta (PVR)
    • Zihuatanejo (ZIH)
  • Los Angeles (LAX)
    • Cancun (CUN)
    • San Jose del Cabo (SJD)
    • Puerto Vallarta (PVR)
  • New York/Newark (EWR)
    • Cancun (CUN)
    • San Jose del Cabo (SJD)
    • Puerto Vallarta (PVR)
  • San Francisco (SFO)
    • Cancun (CUN)
  • Washington Dulles (IAD)
    • Cancun (CUN)

Latin America

United will also increase service to existing Latin America destinations this winter:

  • Houston
    • Managua (MGA)
    • Quito (UIO)
  • Los Angeles
    • Guatemala City (GUA) – 10x weekly
    • San Salvador (SAL) – 11x weekly
  • Washington
    • San Jose (SJO)
    • San Salvador (SAL)

Caribbean

In addition to United’s new service to Santo Domingo, Washington Dulles will serve as United’s Caribbean gateway this winter, with service to:

  • Punta Cana (PUJ)
  • Grand Cayman (GCM)
  • Nassau (NAS)
  • Montego Bay (MBJ)
  • Aruba (AUA)
  • Turks and Caicos (PLS)
  • San Juan (SJU)
  • St. Thomas (STT)
  • St. Maarten (SXM)

These flights will run daily, with the exception of STT and SXM which will run on weekends. These are not service increases.

United’s Full Winter Schedule To Latin America And Caribbean

Here’s a chart that captures United’s full winter schedule to Mexico, the Caribbean, and Central America:

CONCLUSION

As a second wave strikes Europe and Southeast Asia has indicated no loosening of border restrictions, focusing on accessible, warm destinations make sense for the winter season. As a resident of Los Angeles, I’m particularly happy to see the new LAX routes and plan to make use of them.

Thanks for this update. Under The Latin America section, you write “Unite” instead of the airline’s proper name United.

Wow I thought the CLE-CUN route was gone for good when they cut it. It’s nice to see it return!

That’s not a full Latin American winter schedule for United. For example: you don’t list any service between IAH and Costa Rica, yet there are daily nonstops between IAH and both SJO and LIR through the winter. If those were left off, then so were many others.

Perhaps it would be better to label the table as having to do with new or restarted routes?

I’ll amend the table. It was provided.

While not in Latin America, United also has new service out of IAD to EYW. American has increased service as well from DCA.

San Pedro Sula in Honduras is one of the scariest places I ever visited. Not sure why anyone would like to go there.

I would love to see my son get his job back as a 20+ year flight attendant with medical experience, out of Newark.
