The U.S. Department of State has issued urgent guidance for American citizens in a broad swath of the Middle East to “depart now” due to what it describes as serious safety risks linked to the rapidly expanding conflict.
In official advisories, the State Department has instructed U.S. citizens to leave using available commercial transportation, while activating a 24/7 task force and encouraging Americans to enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) to receive real-time alerts.

How Are U.S. Citizens Supposed To Evacuate When Commercial Flights Have Collapsed?
The State Department advises Americans to depart using available commercial transportation, but much of the region’s airspace is closed, and major airports have suspended or significantly reduced operations.
In some countries, commercial flights have halted entirely due to airspace closures. In others, airlines have canceled most services as airports operate under severe restrictions or limited capacity.
Thus, travelers face the following contradiction:
- The advisory says to depart immediately;
- The stated mechanism is commercial transportation;
- Commercial options in many affected countries are currently limited or nonexistent.

As of now, there has been no public announcement from the State Department or Department of Defense outlining a formal U.S. government evacuation operation such as chartered repatriation flights or military airlift support. The only direct assistance offered has been in the booking of commercial flights:

I called that number and the “assistance” was the following recorded message:
“Please do no rely on the US government for assisted departure or evacuation at this time.”
In past crises, the U.S. military has conducted evacuation operations when commercial travel was not viable. However, such missions typically require secure staging areas, host nation coordination, and specific authorization, none of which have been publicly detailed in this situation (at least not yet).
CONCLUSION
The U.S. government has now urged citizens to depart more than a dozen Middle Eastern countries amid escalating conflict. While the directive to leave is clear, the practical pathway for doing so is far less so in a region where commercial flights are grounded or severely restricted. the biggest bottom line is that no one expected that much of the Middle East – including an airport that rivals ATL in the number of passengers it moves – unusable for safe civil air transportation.
At this point, EVERYONE other than a handful of still surviving people in Iran want any and all threats to everyone else in the Middle East eliminated.
This too will pass and likely sooner rather than later.

However, I have been watching the airline industry for 50 years and DL has done the best job in becoming what it is today – but nowhere have I ever said that DL is perfect.
none of which changes the fact that US airlines are largely on the sidelines of all of this – unless someone tells me that US scheduled passenger airlines are operating some of these repatriation flights.

I am aware, Matthew, but this isn’t the first time that the Middle East or other parts of the world have broken into war and left US citizens in harm’s way.
The US government, whether we think it is right or not, does not generally provide evacuation services near as quickly as other countries.
Most US citizens that are in the Middle East did not get there on US airlines -that is true now and has been true for decades – precisely because US airlines are much smaller proportionate to the number of their citizens in the Middle East than for other countries.

and yet ATL has only been closed when all US airspace was closed – and that was after 9/11. The impact to Middle East airlines could well be much larger than 9/11 was to US airlines at least in terms of near-term operations.

Australia isn’t evacuating anyone. Commercial flights are now restarting & citizens can leave of their own accord. Our Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade had been warning travellers that something was brewing, but people continued to live their lives as if nothing had changed. It’s much like the recent Lebanon situation, where the country had an official “Do Not Travel” warning for nine months before Israel started attacking Hezbollah, but it was only after the bombs started dropping that “Lebanese Australians”; ie, people who hold an Australian passport merely as a matter of convenience to ensure themselves a place of refuge when it hits the fan; started bleating about how dangerous things were, and how they weren’t getting any help from the government. If you can’t, or won’t, see the writing on the wall, you shouldn’t expect a rescue mission when the missiles start flying. At most any evacuation should be to Muscat or Riyadh, from where citizens can make, and pay for, their own onward bookings.

It also says it has arranged international bus transportation within the Middle East.

The US often is slower in offering to get Americans out of problematic areas around the globe even if they are rather early in providing warnings before events actually occur but that is a reflection both of US intelligence and involvement in what is going on around the world and the sheer number of Americans traveling or living around the world.
In this case, the US has been acting. There really is no story or no basis for the incessant condemnation of the administration – at least from the perspective of evacuation from conflict areas.

From some GCC countries, some will try to get to fellow GCC member Oman by road to fly out of Oman.
My relatives in Dubai are remaining, at least in the UAE. One is a doctor and has no plans to leave the UAE.
Israel is different; they co-lead this ‘operation,’ their military has the Iron Dome and shelters, and most travelers aren’t merely transiting through there.
GCC has hundreds of thousands of transit passengers on a daily basis, limited anti-drone/missile protection, hardly any shelters (other than parking garages), and were generally caught off-guard.
