U.S. Tells Americans To “Depart Now” From 14 Middle Eastern Countries — But Offers No Evacuation Plan

As the U.S.-Israel conflict with Iran spreads across the Middle East and air travel in the region remains largely suspended, the U.S. government is now urging American citizens in more than a dozen countries to leave immediately.

U.S. Urges Citizens To Evacuate From Middle Eastern Countries Amid Escalating Conflict

The U.S. Department of State has issued urgent guidance for American citizens in a broad swath of the Middle East to “depart now” due to what it describes as serious safety risks linked to the rapidly expanding conflict.

In official advisories, the State Department has instructed U.S. citizens to leave using available commercial transportation, while activating a 24/7 task force and encouraging Americans to enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) to receive real-time alerts.

The advisory applies to more than a dozen countries across the region, including:

  • Bahrain
  • Egypt
  • Iran
  • Iraq
  • Israel
  • Jordan
  • Kuwait
  • Lebanon
  • Oman
  • Qatar
  • Saudi Arabia
  • Syria
  • United Arab Emirates
  • Yemen

The language used in the advisory is unusually direct (“DEPART NOW” in all caps), emphasizing immediate departure and heightened risk across the region.

The @SecRubio @StateDept urges Americans to DEPART NOW from the countries below using available commercial transportation, due to serious safety risks. Americans who need State Department assistance arranging to depart via commercial means, CALL US 24/7 at +1-202-501-4444 (from… pic.twitter.com/vdplAik2Sq

How Are U.S. Citizens Supposed To Evacuate When Commercial Flights Have Collapsed?

The State Department advises Americans to depart using available commercial transportation, but much of the region’s airspace is closed, and major airports have suspended or significantly reduced operations.

In some countries, commercial flights have halted entirely due to airspace closures. In others, airlines have canceled most services as airports operate under severe restrictions or limited capacity.

Thus, travelers face the following contradiction:

  • The advisory says to depart immediately;
  • The stated mechanism is commercial transportation;
  • Commercial options in many affected countries are currently limited or nonexistent.

Maybe someone should have thought of that before bombing Iran?

As of now, there has been no public announcement from the State Department or Department of Defense outlining a formal U.S. government evacuation operation such as chartered repatriation flights or military airlift support. The only direct assistance offered has been in the booking of commercial flights:

The State Department urges Americans to DEPART NOW from the countries listed using available commercial transportation, due to serious safety risks. Americans who need State Department assistance arranging to depart via commercial means, CALL US 24/7 at +1-202-501-4444 (from abroad) and +1-888-407-4747 (from the U.S. and Canada).

I called that number and the “assistance” was the following recorded message:

“Please do no rely on the US government for assisted departure or evacuation at this time.”

In past crises, the U.S. military has conducted evacuation operations when commercial travel was not viable. However, such missions typically require secure staging areas, host nation coordination, and specific authorization, none of which have been publicly detailed in this situation (at least not yet).

CONCLUSION

The U.S. government has now urged citizens to depart more than a dozen Middle Eastern countries amid escalating conflict. While the directive to leave is clear, the practical pathway for doing so is far less so in a region where commercial flights are grounded or severely restricted. Until additional evacuation measures are announced, Americans in the region will face significant logistical challenges in attempting to leave safely…

you do realize that other countries have said the same thing and have no more concrete ways to get their citizens out?

and there are reports that some flights are operating with military escorts out of the area.

the biggest bottom line is that no one expected that much of the Middle East – including an airport that rivals ATL in the number of passengers it moves – unusable for safe civil air transportation.

At this point, EVERYONE other than a handful of still surviving people in Iran want any and all threats to everyone else in the Middle East eliminated.

This too will pass and likely sooner rather than later.

Rivals ATL? My goodness, I’d take Hamad, Zayed, or Dubai International any day over Hartsfield-Jackson, even with missiles… Delta can’t even manage to open a proper Delta One lounge there yet… (yes, I’m being a little sarcastic.)

@1990, I don’t believe Tim was referring to the quality of ATL. Tim was referring to the quantity of air traffic in reference to ATL.

@1990, I will say that this whole anti – Tim Dunn thing on all the blogs is getting too repetitive and old.

So what if Tim Dunn’s opinion is that DL is best in the industry. As a frequent traveler with my family, I don’t agree with the assessment that DL is the best (SQ and BA are the airlines for us), but it certainly does not bother me that Tim holds this view.

And quite frankly, Tim Dunn has a lot of good opinions to offer.

          • Tim Dunn
            March 3, 2026 at 3:31 pm

            thank you, Vinod

and most significantly, I don’t even fly DL the most – haven’t this year so far.

and I have flown private more than I have flown any commercial airline this year.

However, I have been watching the airline industry for 50 years and DL has done the best job in becoming what it is today – but nowhere have I ever said that DL is perfect.

none of which changes the fact that US airlines are largely on the sidelines of all of this – unless someone tells me that US scheduled passenger airlines are operating some of these repatriation flights.

            March 3, 2026 at 4:40 pm

Vinod, I’m pretty sure Tim can handle it, especially if he’s doing well enough to fly private. (Tim, I’m gonna assume that’s Wheels Up, since Delta Private Jets folded into them back in 2020, right?)

            March 4, 2026 at 12:34 am

The comment I made was not in regard to whether Tim Dunn could handle the internet jibes or not. My comment was directed at the folks who constantly go on and on and on about Tim and DL.

Vinod, just to be clear, I’m not ‘anti-Tim’ or ‘anti-Delta.’ I’ve been a Diamond and Platinum Medallion for over a decade now. Tim’s just one of the few other regulars on this and the other travel blogs. Unless he says otherwise, he (and I, and you, and the others) are doing just fine.

            March 4, 2026 at 12:56 pm

@1990, just to re-emphasize. With regard to comments on the internet, I would NOT expect people to NOT be fine. My comment was around the unnecessary “stirring of the pot”, which you yourself indicated.

Uh oh, Vinod, you just gave yourself away. Referring to your ‘opinions’ as facts is a Tim-Dunn-classic!

Nah, your opinions are still opinions; just because you prefer your own opinion, doesn’t make it fact.

I am aware, Matthew, but this isn’t the first time that the Middle East or other parts of the world have broken into war and left US citizens in harm’s way.

The US government, whether we think it is right or not, does not generally provide evacuation services near as quickly as other countries.

Most US citizens that are in the Middle East did not get there on US airlines -that is true now and has been true for decades – precisely because US airlines are much smaller proportionate to the number of their citizens in the Middle East than for other countries.

this isn’t really about politics as precedent.

        1990,
and yet ATL has only been closed when all US airspace was closed – and that was after 9/11. The impact to Middle East airlines could well be much larger than 9/11 was to US airlines at least in terms of near-term operations.

Just trying to make sure I understand your point. Because other countries aren’t getting their citizens out means its ok for the US not to. And even if that’s not ok, it’s going to be over soon so who cares? And by the way, 9/11 closed airports so…. I don’t understand that last point. Maybe you can help clarify?

you do realize that UK airlines provide far more service to the Middle East under normal times.

DL and UA both serve TLV when the missiles are both flying and AA and UA currently serve(d) the Arab Middle East.

Most Americans didn’t get to the Middle East on US airlines in this administration and haven’t and won’t leave on US airlines.

Yes Mr Dunn. But in a conflict safe evacuation of your citizens is a realized plan. The UK didn’t want any part in this mess, and yet they acknowledge protecting their people. Btw, TLV is well projected and not the same situation ” when missiles are flying. And the US can perform escorted airlifts.

Australia isn’t evacuating anyone. Commercial flights are now restarting & citizens can leave of their own accord. Our Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade had been warning travellers that something was brewing, but people continued to live their lives as if nothing had changed. It’s much like the recent Lebanon situation, where the country had an official “Do Not Travel” warning for nine months before Israel started attacking Hezbollah, but it was only after the bombs started dropping that “Lebanese Australians”; ie, people who hold an Australian passport merely as a matter of convenience to ensure themselves a place of refuge when it hits the fan; started bleating about how dangerous things were, and how they weren’t getting any help from the government. If you can’t, or won’t, see the writing on the wall, you shouldn’t expect a rescue mission when the missiles start flying. At most any evacuation should be to Muscat or Riyadh, from where citizens can make, and pay for, their own onward bookings.

You mean I am supposed to hide in the bushes because I accurately point out that the US is indeed evacuating its own citizens despite dozens of comments stating that the US was negligent for not doing what other countries were doing?

The US often is slower in offering to get Americans out of problematic areas around the globe even if they are rather early in providing warnings before events actually occur but that is a reflection both of US intelligence and involvement in what is going on around the world and the sheer number of Americans traveling or living around the world.

In this case, the US has been acting. There really is no story or no basis for the incessant condemnation of the administration – at least from the perspective of evacuation from conflict areas.

As for my identity, I have been outed under some so many false narratives that I could make a movie.
If Matthew and others think it is necessary to post under a real name in order to have credibility, it is stunning the number of people JUST LIKE YOU who think that they can use fake or abbreviated user names and have any credibility.

From some GCC countries, some will try to get to fellow GCC member Oman by road to fly out of Oman.

Israel is different; they co-lead this ‘operation,’ their military has the Iron Dome and shelters, and most travelers aren’t merely transiting through there.

GCC has hundreds of thousands of transit passengers on a daily basis, limited anti-drone/missile protection, hardly any shelters (other than parking garages), and were generally caught off-guard.
