Maybe The Woman Who Walked Onto 737 Wing Was Just Sick…?

There’s a “humorous” story making its way around the internet that a woman just decided to open an emergency exit door and walk onto the wing of a 737 for a few seconds because she was “too hot” to remain onboard. But could it be that she was about to faint on a hot summer day?

UIA Bans Woman Who Walked Onto 737 Wing

On August 31, 2020, Ukraine International Airlines (UIA) flight 6212 landed in Kiev (KBP) after a charter flight from Antalya (AYT). The plane emptied out from front to back. All of a sudden, a family of four noticed mommy was missing. As they stepped off the aircraft, they saw her…stepping out onto the wing of the Boeing 737-800 that had just transported them home.

A passenger onboard told The Sun:

“The aircraft landed and almost all the passengers got off.

“She walked almost all the way from the tail to the emergency exit row, opened the door and went out.

“By that time her two children were outside the plane and standing right next to me.

“They were surprised, saying, ‘that’s our mum!'”

While the storyline has been that she this is some sort of drama queen looking for attention, perhaps there is another explanation?

Imagine the aircraft is hot (it was 90ºF outside) and you’re in the back. UIA charges for everything onboard, so let’s imagine she has not even had a glass of water since she left Antalya. Say people slowly get off the aircraft and the process is delayed even further because the exit is via airstairs, not jetbridge.

Imagine she suffers an episode of vasovagal syncope (fainting spell), starts seeing spots, and feels like she is about to collapse. The cabin air is stale and she has a mask on and cannot breath. So she rips open the over-wing emergency exit door and steps out onto the wing for fresh air.

Plausible? Seems a lot more plausible to me than a woman with no alcohol or drugs in her system who just decided to take a walk while waiting to exit an aircraft.

UIA Not Amused

In any case, UIA is taking the matter very seriously and has banned her. A spokesperson said:

A passenger of flight PS6212 Antalya-Kyiv illegally opened the emergency exit of the plane after it stopped near gate 11 of terminal D and went on to its wing.

“The passenger was flying on a charter vacation with her husband and children.

“The chief pilot immediately summoned the aviation security, border service, police and medical centre of Boryspil Airport.

“The passenger was blacklisted for gross violation of aviation safety rules and behavior on board.”

UIA also wants the woman to be fined a “high” amount as a deterrent to others.

CONCLUSION

I chuckled at this story too, but actually think there might be something more going on. Maybe she was just about to collapse?

What do you think really happened onboard?

“What do you think really happened onboard?”

She probably has a mental disorder.

I agree. Some forms of epilepsy can present with strange behaviour that the person themselves are unaware of as well… so I wouldn’t be so quick to jump to conclusions.

I don’t buy it. In your words, she suffers an episode of vasovagal syncope (fainting spell), starts seeing spots, and feels like she is about to collapse. Yet she has the presence of mind to open an emergency exit, which requires awareness and sight and physical strength? Unless she’s a trained crewmember, she couldn’t open an emergency exit door just like *finger snap* that. She’s also travelling with two kids, who just left mum to move toward the emergency exit door while deplaning? At least there was no slide that inflated, causing a huge delay or additional expense to the air carrier.

Lucky for her a slide didn’t blow (don’t think thee is one at that door} or she damaged a control surface or composite component. Those are huge expenses. $$$
