Aeromexico Says “Gracias” To South Korea With Comical Discount

After a 0-2 defeat against South Korea, Germany was knocked out of the World Cup in the group stage for the first time since 1938. And while Germans are lamenting, Mexico is rejoicing. Flag carrier Aeromexico is doing more than rejoicing: it’s slashing fares to South Korea by 20%.

Earlier this week, I wrote about watching the World Cup live on Lufthansa. Germans care about football soccer like Americans care about the Kardashians…its an important part of daily life. I was in Germany during the 2014 World Cup (in which Germany won) and I had never seen so much German patriotism. German flags adorned homes up and down the streets of Frankfurt. I’d imagine this week is very different.

Put simply, Germany flubbed its game against South Korea yesterday. The unexpected loss helped Mexico to advance to the next round. In appreciation to the South Korean team for holding the German team scoreless, Aeromexico is offering a 20% discount on flights to Seoul.

It’s Twitter ad even re-branded one of its 787 Dreamliners “AeroCorea” (Corea is Spanish for Korea).

Aeromexico flies to Seoul from Monterrey, utilizing a 787-8 Dreamliner. Round-trip economy class fares start at $899:
