This Airport Has a Huge Fitness Center

Matthew Klint Posted onOctober 24, 2017November 14, 2023 7 Comments

With all the air travel I do, one concern is that when my metabolism starts to slow down as I further age, I face an increased risk for packing on the pounds. Too bad I don’t connect through Toronto more often.

I had to smile as I exited customs in Terminal 1 last week at Toronto Pearson and found the following full-service gym right in the terminal:

a gym with a red sign

What a great concept for travelers, airport employees, and flight crews.

Gym membership is available to GoodLife Gym, but so are day passes for 15CAD (12USD). The gym is over 10,000 square feet and was not all that crowded on a Monday at noon. If you’re a member of GoodLife Gym already, there is no additional charge for airport access.

Amenities include:

  • State-of-the-art cardiovascular equipment with personal viewing monitors
  • Free weights and strength training equipment
  • Stretching area
  • Express workout programs available – stretching, core & yoga
  • Luggage storage
  • Modern changerooms and showers with soap, conditioner, lotion and hair dryers for the convenience and packing of travelers
  • Towel service
  • Reebok clothing and shoe rental

Not bad! Opening hours are from 4am to 11:30p seven days per week.

CONCLUSION

The only other “airport” fitness centers I have encountered are the Hilton Gym at Chicago O’Hare (a brisk 10-15 minute walk from the nearest passenger terminal) and the small gym inside Etihad’s new first class lounge in Abu Dhabi. The Goodlife Fitness center in Toronto Pearson sets a standard for airport fitness centers.

There used to be a small workout room at the Terminal A Admirals Club at DFW. It appears to have closed for good back in April, though.

My fat ass would rather go into the lounge and enjoy couple extra drinks minus the cardio.

Also, Spirit and Allegiant fly out of there if you want to get fancy.

Definitely sounds like a good idea, but I am surprised it is not airside. I think it would get a lot more business if it was located airside. Whenever I arrive at YYZ Terminal 1, it always looks empty, at least from the outside, no matter what time of day I arrived at, or what day of the week it is. Most people arriving I would assume go straight home, to their hotel or to their workplace and when departing I would much rather prefer going through security then working out as opposed to working out then having to go through security.
