American Airlines and JetBlue are adding a number of new routes from New York LaGuardia (LGA) in 2023 in a move they claim shows how vital the Northeast Alliance is for US consumers.
New American Airlines Routes From New York LaGuardia (LGA)
Beginning on May 5, 2023, American Airlines will launch six new routes from New York LaGuardia Airport. New routes include:
- Birmingham, Alabama (BHM)
- Buffalo, New York (BUF)
- Columbia, South Carolina (CAE)
- Grand Rapids, Michigan (GRR)
- Greenville, South Carolina (GSP)
- Knoxville, Tennessee (TYS)
In addition to these new routes, American will also add additional frequencies to Boston (BOS) and Louisville, Kentucky (SDF) and also make Asheville, North Carolina (AVL) service year-round.
New JetBlue Routes From New York LaGuardia (LGA)
JetBlue will also be adding new routes from LGA in spring 2023, including:
- Atlanta, Georgia (ATL)
- Hyannis, Massachusetts (HYA)
- Nassau, Bahamas (NAS)
- Bermuda (BDA)
JetBlue says these new routes provide customers “a compelling alternative to the carriers that have dominated the market for too long.”
American Airlines Credits New Routes To Northeast Alliance
As regulators closely scrutinize the so-called “Northeast Alliance” between JetBlue and American Airlines, American Airlines is crediting the alliance for these new routes:
JetBlue and American announced the innovative alliance in 2020 to increase competition in the Northeast. The NEA is meant to overcome the insurmountable obstacles historically faced by each airline in challenging other airlines’ dominance in the region. In the time since, the NEA has created a third, full-scale competitor in New York in the form of a virtual network that closes longstanding competitive gaps. In Boston, the alliance likewise is empowering more growth by both carriers, as American expands its global product offering and JetBlue extends its low fares and high-quality product to new markets.
So far, the NEA has resulted in approximately 50 new routes out of JFK, LGA, BOS and EWR; increased frequencies on more than 130 existing routes; 90 nonstop routes with increased capacity; and 17 new international routes launched.
CONCLUSION
American Airlines and JetBlue are adding new routes out of LGA in an attempt to show their Northeast Alliance is working as promised to give customers more choice in New York City. The 10 new routes, six on American, four on JetBlue, begin next spring.
ELIMINATE THE PERIMETER RULE NOW!!!!!!!
LGA is congested enough with the perimeter rule.
STOP the NEA!!! DOJ, it’s time to bring the game home!!!
Disappointed that American will drop the 4 x daily peak Eagle flights on LGA-ATL. Not a fan of JetBlue and the frequent delays and operational issues it has.
When stuff goes wrong at JetBlue, it really hits the fan. Jetlue is ok when operations are perfectly smooth, but with the slightest wrinkle . . . you’re sleeping at the airport.
B6 reminds me of Eastern Airlines. Strong on the east coast, South America, and the Caribbean; dabbled in Europa; and too reliant on NYC, BOS, & FLA. I understand its desire to gain traction in the Midwest and West Coast, but I feel it paid too dearly for NK. Also, there’s no need for a 5th nationwide airline and Hawaii is just PAX cashing in loyalty points…..
If the NEA verdict goes south, I feel the dominos will fall and B6 will declare chapter 11. Let’s hope it can obtain NK before the court house filing.
