Great Coffee In Johannesburg (Rosebank)

On my last visit to Johannesburg, I stayed in Melrose Arch and found a few great coffee shops. On this trip, I found a couple more great ones in the trendy Rosebank suburb.

Best Coffee In Johannesburg (Rosebank)

In my prior report, a couple of readers recommended a coffee shop called Father in the Rosebank neighborhood. I was glad to try it and now regard it as my favorite coffee shop in Johannesburg.

8:00 AM – 5:00 PM (Saturday, Sunday)

The baristas here were pros and I knew the decor, atmosphere, coffee machine, and menu itself signified a great coffee shop. It is located just off Oxford Road next to a KFC. When I see a flat white or affogato on the menu, I smile. I also smile at the strong USD, which goes so far in South Africa. A cup of coffee like this would cost $4-5 in the USA, but is $2 here.

Tap and pay is everywhere in South Africa. I found no need my entire journey to pull out any cash.

Most importantly, the flat white was bursting with flavor and nicely presented.

I stopped after one cup because I wanted to review one other place, but I came back the next morning for another flat white and a cortado (served in the Gibraltar glass), which was even better than flat white

My next stop was Tashas, just a few meters away in the same shopping center, “The Zone.”

8:00 AM – 3:00 PM (Sunday)

This is a fancy chain with locations around the world, though I was not aware of that at the time. I chose Tashas because it was busy and because it was a beautiful crisp winter afternoon (July) and I wanted to sit outside.

Along with my cappuccino, I ordered a green drink, which I like to make at home each day and includes a blend of green vegetables and fruit. It really hit the spot and the coffee was excellent too, though not as good as Father.

85 Rand is less than $5.00. What a treat.

CONCLUSION

The coffee culture is rich in Johannesburg and I quite enjoyed my afternoon coffee in Rosebank. I will return to both cafés, but particularly look forward to returning to Father.

Father looks great. I tend to follow your coffee recs, so I’m sure I’ll stop there this spring. Honestly, I don’t know why more of the service industry doesn’t move to QR code ordering and payment at your table. Not just with coffee. In many ways the concept of a waiter seems unnecessary. I’d take a QR code and a food runner even at a fine dining establishment.
