Armed bandits disguised as federal police officers successfully interdicted $30MN worth of gold and other precious metals from a major Brazilian airport.
Eight armed men perpetrated the act in two Mitsubishi vehicles disguised to resemble Brazilian Federal Police cars. The men arrived at Guarulhos International airport in Sao Paulo (GRU) and pulled up to the cargo terminal. Wearing masks, they gained entry onto the premises then quickly filled up their vehicles with about 750kg (1600 pounds) worth of gold and other valuable metals. The metals were bound for New York and Switzerland and valued at a minimum of $30MN.
The bandits took two airport workers hostage, including a supervisor. No one was hurt during the assault and the hostages were later released unharmed. No shots were fired.
Police later found the vehicles abandoned in Jardim Pantanal, about 12 miles from the airport, but there is no sign of the two hostages.
Airport operates at GRU were not interrupted due to the heist.
You can even watch a video of the scene unfolding:
Not A First-Time Offense
This isn’t the first time such a theft has occurred at GRU and probably won’t be the last. Last year, bandits stole $5MN off a Lufthansa jet in a similar stunt. Think it was the same people?
CONCLUSION
This sure seems like an inside job. After all, how else would these men know when and where the precious metal shipment was coming in? Hopefully everyone was well-insured…

If you know Brazil well you won’t even pay attention on news like this. This happens more often than you think but called attention because it was at GRU airport and was caught in tape.

What are the other precious metals?
