Video: Man Restrained By Passengers And Crew On Miami Flight

Man Had To Be Restrained

On American Airlines flight 948 from Rio De Janeiro to Miami, a passenger was restrained and purportedly duct-taped by four passengers and members of crew. In the video, he can be heard screaming.

Limited Details

Miami 10 Local News first reported the details of the incident onboard the aircraft. However, its written report misidentified the flight number (9948 from Canton to Philadelphia rather than 948 from Rio De Janeiro to Miami.) The news station stated they had contacted American Airlines for comment but had not received word back.

According to FlightStats.com, the aircraft did not appear to divert though the background noise on the video suggests that it took place in flight. The plane tracking site reports that the equipment was a Boeing 777-200 and the video appears to confirm that equipment and the location of the incident was in a galley however, I can’t confirm if it was the forward or aft galley based on the video. An American Airlines flight attendant can be seen documenting the event on her cell phone.

According to the flight path, the aircraft did not deviate from its path or prematurely land which suggests to me that this occurred near the end of the flight and the crew was satisfied that the event was contained. Without further context, it’s hard to say what provoked the man or caused him to become distressed.

The subject was reportedly a South Florida man, but I haven’t found any evidence to confirm that.

No arrests were made in connection with the incident, again, this is surprising to me.

Conclusion

With few details outside of the video itself, it’s hard to say what caused a passenger to behave erratically on American Airlines flight 984 from Rio De Janeiro to Miami, Florida on Friday night landing Saturday morning, December 30th, 2023. I’m surprised that there wasn’t an arrest made and would have thought the FAA would have to report details. I’ll be interested to see what develops further from this terrifying event.

My stuffed up ears hear the man screaming “I am having a bad day”. (Well yeah) but might suggest he is off his meds and the reason an arrest has not been made.

Flight attendants should be trained as prison guards with tasers and Nevermind the food service..

Funny I had a similar thought. They should just hire prison guards then send them to charm school for a little polish. The guards would be experienced with tough customers in confined spaces.

The flight actually diverted to Manaus (MAO) in Brazil and the passenger was arrested there by the Federal Police. You can see on FlightRadar24 that Dec 28 AA948 landed in MAO around 05:05 UTC and departed around 7:04 UTC to Miami.
