Terror In The Skies: Man Threatens To Break Neck Of United Flight Attendant After He Tells Him To End Phone Call, Put On Mask

We enjoyed a bit of a lull in mask-related onboard incidents in September, but they seem to be returning and this particular incident on a United Airlines flight is absolutely vile.

Man Violently Threatens United Flight Attendant And Other Passengers After Being Told To End Phone Call, Keep Mask On

I must warn you: the language is very coarse in the TikTok videos below, but just like my own incident, I think it is important to put the incident into proper context.

The incident takes places on a United Airlines flight to California operated by a 787 Dreamliner. According to Alexander Clark, who uploaded the video, a man was apparently told four times to end his telephone call and put on his mask before he exploded when asked for a fifth time. He did not like being told what to do:

“The f***  you talking to me like that for, bro?”

“Take me off! I don’t give a f***! I don’t even want to go to Cali!”

He then promises the flight attendant he will find out his name, date of birth, and address before the flight lands, adding, “I will know your social security number before I get off this plane! On my daughter!” (he was talking to his daughter on the phone)

He stands up, get in the face of a flight attendant, then threatens to break the neck of the flight attendant and the peacemaker trying to stand between them. He then threatens to hurt Clark, who was recording the incident on his phone. It isn’t clear who the other two men were, one of whom seemed to be traveling with him.

United Airlines chose not to comment on this story, but I’m not sure any comment was necessary – this was simply a horrific, indefensible incident and there really is no spin to put on this.

Think about the how frightened the flight attendant must have been to have this lunatic in his face. Think about the safety of other passengers onboard. It’s all so bad.

CONCLUSION

A maniac went ballistic on a United flight after being told to put on his mask and end his phone call. He’s now in a for a rude awakening and can expect a huge fine for his poor behavior onboard. I think this incident could early have turned out much more violent and in this case, the cameras probably tempered his response. What a world…

    “2 hours late” he says

Guessing they were originally on the delayed Noon EWR-LAX flight and rebooked onto the 2:50 787 which went out only 2 min late

If they were only 2 min late on that wonder if the boarding door was even closed – which raises why he was told to get off the phone other than putting his mask on.

Cali is a city in Colombia. As in Cali Cartel. They had, at one point, 80% of the cocaine market.

        California is not Cali.

I use it. Just like I say LA, or DC, or how we all type airport codes when chatting. Have no clue why Cali people are so offended by it, lol. One friend in LA called me out for using it by saying, “People will think you’re not from here.” My response was, “Well, I’m not.”

This was exactly my thought when I read this. Nobody in the state uses the phrase, but it’s almost considered commonplace in the other 49 States. Perhaps he was heading to Frisco for some great clam chowder. Or maybe after landing at the LA airport he planned to take Expressway 110 up to the Southern Cal football game.

      • Stuart Reply
        October 19, 2021 at 9:16 pm

Have not heard anyone use, “Frisco” in 30 years. It never sounded right anyway. Cali sounds good. It fits. And would actually be a good marketing phrase for attracting people there in ad campaigns, perhaps so as to make up for all those fleeing to Oregon, MT, Idaho, NV, and other places. And if Californians want to make an issue of it as being something the “others” say, so be it. Cali is not the center of the world.

I will continue to use Cali. Laugh all you want. Just as you say “Vegas” and “LA.” Oh, but I do at least offer identity to freeways in Cali. I do call it ‘The 110.” I find it a quirky thing and it’s fun. Though I promise not to judge you when you come to my city and say, “Reagan Airport.” Or get puzzled looks when you say, “The 495”

Seen the stats on the number of disruptive passenger events over the past year? There’s a definite trend. Although, I haven’t heard if this trend is or is not reflected in other countries. Lacking that information, I can see where one may conclude this trend is limited to the US, in which case I’d say the original post has some degree of veracity.

No worries. To stay safe, all the flight attendant has to do is remember to replace her mask between sips and bites, per federal regulations.

That guy should be fined and charged. But no sympathy for cabin crews. They’ve made their beds.

This may or may not be a crap rule but the flight attendant has to enforce it whether or not he or she agrees as long as he continues to work for United. I believe after the third time asking him politely I would seek assistance from someone else.

Are people aware that the mask mandate is contained in federal regulations, which makes the airline subject to fines if it is not enforced, and the flight attendants subject to termination? Screaming at the flight attendants about having to wear a mask is like complaining to Pizza Hut about the bad service at McDonald’s.

    • JoEllen Reply
      October 19, 2021 at 4:23 pm

@ Cy – The operative words being arrest and prosecute. For years (decades) a slap on the wrist was all that was done with a gratuitous hand-holding onto the next flight. I hold out no hope that this will be done, regardless of all the protests and shouting by FA’s and others – all talk and no action. Airlines have tons of lawyers – they need to use them against people who disrupt flights and are a danger to ground staff, other passengers and crew. I’ve seen it for years, albeit on a lesser scale at ticket counters where people had meltdowns over not getting their unreasonable requests met. I’ve seen the biggest morons walking this earth (or flying in this case) escorted to the lounge to be coddled and rewarded for their perceived injustice. One was a male passenger who decided his wife did not need to be present as he checked both of them in – no ID for her, no security check – insisted we check them both in with her sight unseen. When I told him she would have to be present, he loudly went ballistic with the usual throwing around his status like it was a spear. When a supervisor intervened he did nothing but attack me as not wanting to help him while he (the supervisor) ignored all that, checked in the wife unseen and then told the guy he could spend is non-membership waiting time in the lounge. I love it though when I used to sign out of my computer (lest I be accused later on of doing what was wrong), step aside and blithely wave my supervisor onto it to do the dirty work. Trust me there were times I wish it would bite them but they always had a way to talk themselves out of it. Horrible reaction to rule-breaking passengers.

There very probably was police waiting for them at the departure or arrival gate (most likely departure) those 3 will also be on the no fly list and IF they had any status, (doubtful) that has almost certainly been removed.

Since they act like wild animals, I also don’t “take them on” or argue with such a person. I would walk away and/or ignore them. If YOUR CHARACTER allows that in your space or sphere, so be it – accept the consequences – exactly why the world continues with these morons acting up – because people like you with no standards of civility allow it, feel sorry for them or worse, pat them on the back. I was loading groceries into my car a couple of days ago, minding my own business, when I heard a man cussing 50 yards away. I looked up and saw that the man was screaming at me to take my mask off (with a lot of expletives) and how I was a slave to the government. I hadn’t even realized that I had forgotten to take my mask off after I left the grocery store. 🙂

I instincively called 911 as the man was theatening and I didn’t know if he had a weapon. The man then shouted that I was a liar and peeled off in his truck. I was dumbfounded and a little shaken. Not sure why the guy who was lecturing me about freedom wouldn’t allow me the freedom to wear my mask in peace. 🙂

After 9/11 when United Airlines (and about all others) were upgrading their on-board security kits, United considered including tasers along with the duct tape and flex cuffs. It was ultimately decided not to include tasers in the security kit. But, it may be time to reconsider that decision.

The change in flying customers is sad. Maybe the penalty for unruly in flight behavior should be a lifetime flight ban across all airlines. My first business flight was in the middle 60’s when I was in the Army. I have noticed over the years a distinct reduction in the class of the passengers. Not all, but some.

This guy should have been arrested upon deplaning and charged appropriately, PERIOD…… I hope United bans him for life and he can walk his sorry ass back to the east coast from “Cali” if that is where he deplanedd.
This is another example of an entitled pea-brained little shit, who does not deserve the privilege of flying.
The rules are the rules and airlines and their employees must enforce them and passengers need to respect them or don’t fly……. Just because they feel so entitled and don’t like the rules is not a valid reason to not have to follow them, i.e. they have a choice of how to travel and if they choose to fly or take another means of transportation covered under the Federal mask mandate, they must wear the damn mask!!

I pity the poor flight attendants that have to put up with such idiots and if I were him, I would have calmly picked up the phone and called the pilot, who would have put an end to it by having him removed immediately, and hopefully with force.

United needs to come out with a full report of this incident, so the flying public knows there are consequences to their poor and uncivil behavior, which was I hope is banned for life from United.

@ Lorie, if you really believe these are crap rules and flight attendants should not enforce them, you must be a total Trumptard Covidiot……….. Rules are rules and please stay off planes if you don’t want to follow them.
