My Meal of the Week feature examines an airline meal from my travels over the years. This may be a meal from earlier in the week or it may be a meal served over a decade ago.
I find myself in the mood for BBQ this afternoon, which caused my mind to drift to a “British Barbecue” dinner I enjoyed on a British Airways business class flight from London.
British Airways Business Class Barbecue
As summer approaches, I look forward to grilling in my own yard, but no matter the time of year I enjoy a succulent BBQ dinner. I’ve tried BBQ all over the world, but never on an airplane…until it showed up on the menu of my British Airways flight from London to Los Angeles.
Here’s how the menu described it:
British barbecue
marinated Berkshire pork belly, dry-rub
chicken skewer, baked baby new potatoes,
charred Padrón pepper
I ordered the Welsh lamb shank and Augustine ordered this. He ended up eating a bit more than half of his dinner, so I got to finish it. Every part of the meal was excellent. Pork belly is difficult to get right on the plane, but it was succulent and well-seasoned. The pepper had the perfect amount of heat and the chicken skewer was also perfectly seasoned. Even the baby potatoes were great complements.
I’ve never understood why people complain about British Airways catering, especially in the Do & Co era, since I consistently the find the premium cabin cuisine on both shot haul and longhaul flights to be delicious. Not decadent. Not fancy. Just delicious. British Airways does the simple things right and that makes me look forward to every BA flight. I certainly hope to try this dish again.

@Matthew, the answer to why some people complain about BA catering is summed up by the John Lydgate “You can please some of the people all of the time, you can please all of the people some of the time, but you can’t please all of the people all of the time”.
As a side note, in another article you said the reader sent you the pic of the shirtless man, as someone who doesn’t use Social Media, but might like to contact you by email if need arsies, do you have an email address we readers can have?

Oh, Matthew…. You said that you enjoy grilling in the summer but in the same sentence say you enjoy barbecue any time of year…. Please tell me you are not confabulating grilling with proper barbecue….
If you were looking for controversy and heated comments in the blog, that’s one way to create it,… Just wait for all the proper southerners to chime in on the difference
Lol. So my friend has a proper smoker and I do know what real and true BBQ tastes like! 😉
I question that you have many friends
Girl, you go right ahead.
“I’ve never understood why people complain about British Airways catering, especially in the Do & Co era”
So much better than it was in the pre-Do&Co era…even if the quantity of the second meal portions seem a bit reduced.
Totally agree with u !
Second meal Portion and club kitchen is so sad…
Agree. I like the Do&Co catering on BA, and before they started using them, BA food was worse than United’s. However, there is no accounting for taste. I once saw a comment on a UA forum that the poster liked the UA inflight J food much better than that “fancy” French food in Air France business class. Probably someone from the Midwest.
I have to say, my experience with BA this week on mid-haul RAK-LHR was way below expectations. They hadn’t loaded enough meals for all Club Europe passengers; there was no ice available, all drinks/wines were warm; all glassware had been used on the outbound sector and it was all plastic cups. Indicative of their broader operational issues at the moment on the ground and in the air.
Sad to hear.
British Airways first class is truly the world’s best business class.
After Ben’s recent review, I even have to question that.
I would think that British Airways does British food well. Looked great to me. Very nice plate presentation. Thanks for sharing.
BA has very good catering, but the seating in Club Europe is really unbearable, they add no extra legroom over economy. After my LOT business class transatlantic flight I’m beginning to wonder if DO&CO isn’t a bit overrated.Fish served with a bottled tasting teriyaki,a little wasabi added to mashed potatoes, woohoo.
Agreed Business Class Catering has improved since Do&Co have started to supply, but the biggest plus is that the budget must have been increased substantially as Do & Co are not cheap.
So you get what you are paying for, but look at menu mostly a cheap chocolate type pudding, poor salad, and second sevice has been reduced on quantity
It’s true – BA must have got a very good price on those. I’m sick of the pudding.
