While I do miss the days of free coffee on Lufthansa, I am quite thankful that the Dallmayr coffee in economy class…and the chocolate…are better than ever.
Dallmayr Coffee And Pralines In Lufthansa Economy Class From “Onboard Delights” Menu
While SAS and British Airways still manage free coffee, Lufthansa is now charging for it. But in one small sense, I am happy to accept this tradeoff, for the coffee in Lufthansa behind the curtain is suddenly as good (if not better) than the coffee in the front cabin of the aircraft. Founded in Munich in 1700, its original store is still open.
Coffee and chocolate go well together…it’s a relatively harmless excess and both bring out the flavor of the other.
Lufthansa has both on their buy-on-board menu and both the coffee and the chocolate happen to be from the same brand, Dallmayr. Dallmayr is a well-known German coffee brand that has been in operation for over 300 years.
The coffee is €3.50:
A fully aromatic coffee with a slightly nutty note, consisting of 100 % soluble Arabica coffee (250 ml). 100 % Rainforest Alliance Certified.
The chocolate pralines run €8.50:
Sweeten your flight with this selection from Dallmayr Pralinenmanufaktur: coconut, leaf brittle, passion fruit and espresso – each recipe stands for craftsmanship and first-class ingredients (40 g)
Coffee is served in a sturdy, reusable plastic cup that helped to keep it warm. The pralines were nicely partitioned in a box. I’m not a coconut fan, but the leaf brittle and especially the espresso one were quite nice.
Lufthansa also provides free chocolate (and a water bottle) on every flight, but it is milk chocolate and I greatly prefer darker chocolate.
CONCLUSION
€12 for a cup of coffee and four bites of chocolate is on the high side, but it helped to pass time and was a nice treat. I would have rendered the same positive assessment on the ground and am therefore quite happy that it appears you can count on Lufthansa now for drinkable coffee.

On the one hand, glad the coffee was good…on the other, how sad that even coffee isn’t provided for free anymore.

I keep waiting for your review of the Lufthansa cheese sandwich served in economy. On our recent flights to Israel, we were served cheese sandwiches on 3 of our 4 flights. One version of the sandwich had some sort of tomato/zucchini tapenade. It was completely unappealing and after one bite I decided I’d rather be hungry. The people sitting near us who were from Germany even hesitated when they opened them, but did eat them. For our tour group, they became legendary and helped us create some pretty awesome memes!

No, I’m talking about the ones that are handed out to everyone.
Not sure that the warm brown fluid BA occasionally serve can be reasonably compared with the LH offering.
The article is also factually wrong… BA charge for their inferior beverage on all but 2-3 “short-haul” routes (most carriers would classify them differently). Their equivalent of chocolates / sandwiches as reliably served by LH is nano portions of dessicated non refrigerated “cake” or a 10gr packet of crisps
So Matthew, do you ever mail order Dallmyar coffee to brew at home, as a coffee connoisseur? Just wondering if I should put this on my list to try at some point.
Lufthansa short haul services are terrible. The most uncomfortable seats. No service for free of any kind. Often run down airplanes. Better to fly Ryanair or Easyjet within Europe. Its the same kind of service but at least low cost done righr.
Air Dolomiti now sell espresso in economy (complimentary in C), hopefully this will be expanded across the entire LH Group- probably the only Buy on Board item that would ever interest me apart from the odd scale model of a plane.
