Another passenger onboard called it the “scariest moment of my life” and asked for more details, suggesting that the airline did not provide details, even after landing.

An American Airlines spokesperson also refused to go into detail, simply noting:
“Passengers were deplaned and bused to the terminal, and the aircraft was inspected by authorities. Safety and security is our top priority and we apologize to our customers for any inconvenience this caused.”
What could have occurred for passengers to be ordered to place their hands on their heads for the final hour of the flight? While my first thought was a bomb threat had been called in (why force the entire plane into an uncomfortable position rather than just have law enforcement personnel waiting to meet the flight and escort the passenger off if it was only one problematic passenger?)
But another passenger onboard reports the passenger arrested a woman who screamed for over 90 minutes and was eventually duct-taped to her seat.

Fully vaxxed isn’t exactly “safe from Delta” We can and do get infected, but much less likely to die. Whether we’re less likely to infect others, esp the unvaxxed, is probable but not completely established yet. But there’s the Peru variant which may be resistant to all our vaxs, and in order to stop the spread, which means more infections, AND MORE mutations, mask wearing esp in closed areas should imho be mandatory. When Peru gets here we’re going to be again close to square one, it seems. The point is there’s no real downside to masks, if you get one good enough, and it will help protect us all. Distancing where possible. Here’s hoping vax manufacturer’s can get boosters in time. These might not have been necessary had everyone followed the guidelines.

I was once on an LHR-bound flight from which a passenger needed to be escorted off the plane by law officials. All we were told to do was sit tight in our seats until the bobbies could haul the guy away (some passengers tried to ignore this instruction and only stopped once they saw the police and after a firm reassertion by the FA). No hands on head required …
Here’s what I think.
1) A threat to the flight was identified.
2) Nature of the threat was not specific.
3) Passengers are requested to place their hands over their head to avoid someone retrieving a weapon and /or accessing a trigger to an explosive device or detonating an explosive device.
4) Passengers asked not to record to not have their cell phones out, not necessarily to infringe on their constitutional rights but to maintain their hands visible and to eliminate the risk of an unintended cell phone signal detonating a potential explosive devise.
#2 , no the threat was specific since someone in particular was arrested. You were not TOLD the nature of the threat, Big difference. the only other time people were locked down in their seats for a threat was with the shoe bomber, so the threat must have been important.

And I don’t think the lady duct-taped to the seat was the same flight based on how she wrote her response, it seemed more of a “yeah crap be crazy these days, here’s my example” than a “this is why that happened” response.
And @James, what the hell does this have to do with mask wearing, which is a health/safety science-based issue not a security based one? This was clearly a security threat.
It could actually have a lot to do with mask wearing. I wore surgical masks regularly in the OR on active duty. That was 30 years ago and the OR was air conditioned (65 F). Put me in a public place where it’s too warm and I am in a mask I get cranky. It wouldn’t surprise me at all if more than a few people started feeling claustrophobic and threw a fit on a flight.
I’m not advocating that behavior at all, but I do understand exactly how it could happen.
Except normally the passengers can remove their masks to eat or drink on the plan. You can’t really do that in a surgery suite, can you? Besides it’s not like passengers are wearing an N-95 or a NOSH with a face shield, you want to talk about sweaty! Ugh!

How many crew members are there on the aircraft to watch the passengers (7-10 max)? It is not possible for them to observe everyone on the flight, or even to react in any way to stop such an occurrence!!!

On board, flight attendants are essentially police officers, and it is wise to treat them as such. (If one of them annoys you, don’t get nasty.) I don’t know about what happened on the plane, but holding an entire planeload of people in the airport afterwards was an illegal mass detention. You have to have reasonable suspicion on EACH AND EVERY person you hold, and they obviously did not. At a minimum, every cop involved should be fired, regardless of their reasons.

Sky Marshals work under cover and their identities must be concealed. A filming ban is the logical thing to do if marshals must act publicly. Hands on the head provides more safety for the marshals and makes filming more difficult. No totalitarianism or conspiracies — just common sense protection of very valuable law enforcement folks. The people whining are the ones who would be the first to wail like toddlers if law enforcement wasn’t on board and things got serious.
Except there’s no expectation of privacy in a public place. You’re allowed to film police in action, and thank goodness you can. If a Marshall is doing his or her job correctly, they would have no concern about being filmed.

Think this through and you may think differently. This is the perspective from a retired Military Policeman. It’s just one person’s viewpoint from a law enforcement viewpoint. The requirement to place your hands on your head must have been required based on the situation they were presented with. I am not a fan of this airline as they did me wrong on a ticket recently that I had to cancel. That being said, my personal issue has nothing to do with this, so you can be sure my comments are genuine. Requirering hands on the head, very well may have been due to the situation they were presented with, and keeping everyone’s hands visible was essential to ensure a safer outcome. For example, and this is 100% just an example: If someone called in a bomb threat it would be important to keep everyones hands visible. This would make it harder to do anything remotely. Which would also account for the requirement regarding no video. Any electronic device can be used as a detonator. Granted, the odds of it happening are slim but not impossible, especially in today’s world, safety has to come first. Every threat has to be taken seriously. In regard to diverting. Depending on where they were, and when they got all of their information, logistically it may not have been practical to divert. There are a lot of things that have to be considered. A few being, what the actual threat was, how much fuel was left, and ground resources available when they land. It was more than likely determined that the best course of action, based on the situation, was to finish the flight. I realize situations like this are an inconvenience to flyers, but you have to look at it logically. The safety of all the passengers, and crew come first. So regardless of what you may see at face value, you never know what the airlines were truly dealing with in that moment on the back end. Keeping people in the terminal was surely for a specific reason, be is safety, security or both, that is common practice in any police situation where many people are involved. People are released once safety and security can be assured. Anyway, that’s my 2 cents based on a retired Military Police perspective.
