Introduction: The Holidays At 40,000 Feet On SAS, easyJet, And United

Welcome to my next trip report, which will retell our brief Christmas holiday trip to Germany to visit my wife’s family on United, SAS and easyJet.

A Holiday Trip To Germany On SAS, easyJet, And United

I’ve spent over 800,000 SAS miles over the last year…several trips back and forth to Europe with the family adds up. Both my wife Heidi and I keep very busy and time off comes at a premium.

As our family quickly grows and her family in Germany ages, we try to take every opportunity we can to visit. Even so, it’s nice to go in business class…

About a month before travel, SAS opened up round-trip space from Chicago O’Hare to Copenhagen in business class (booked under the old rate of 50K miles each way…the price is now 60K one-way…and the kids are half price), but it required traveling on Christmas Eve to Copenhagen and returning on New Year’s Day.

I was able to add a segment from Zurich to Copenhagen on the return for no extra miles, but there was no space on Christmas Day from Copenhagen to Zurich or even Frankfurt, so I purchased that ticket on EasyJet for $95/ticket.

SAS has an extremely generous baggage limit. As a SkyTeamElite Plus (SAS Gold) traveling in business class with my family, we could check up to 10 bags at no cost…wow. But we keep clothes in Germany and so we traveled with “personal items” only…a duffel bag for me and a backpack for my wife and the kids….funny story about that on the SAS outbound flight that I will include in my flight review.

We spent most of Christmas Day in the SAS Lounge waiting for our flight…a unique Christmas indeed, but actually a very precious time that we all enjoyed.

It was a very low-key week in Germany…the usual long walks, ice cream, coffee, catching up on sleep, and catching up with family.

Here are the segments for this trip report:

  • United Airlines A321neo Economy Class Red Eye Review Los Angeles – Chicago
  • Air France Lounge Chicago (ORD)
  • SAS A350 Business Class Chicago – Copenhagen
  • SAS Lounge Copenhagen (CPH)
  • easyJet A320 Copenhagen – Basel
  • SAS A330 Business Class Zurich – Copenhagen
  • SAS A3550 Business Class Copenhagen – Chicago

(I won’t review the American Airlines Chicago – LA segment at this time)
