ITA Airways Launches “Superior Class” On Domestic Flights

Italian flag carrier ITA Airways, the successor to Alitalia, has introduced “Superior Class” on domestic flights, a business class product its predecessor also offered.

ITA Airways Superior Class Available On Domestic Flights

ITA Airways has launched a domestic business class product called Superior Class, which includes:

  • Priority check-in
  • Complimentary checked baggage (two bags, 23 kilograms each)
  • Priority security
  • Lounge access*
  • Priority boarding
  • Preferred seating in front of cabin
  • Blocked middle seat
  • Enhanced catering

The service is currently available on select domestic flights and will be available on all domestic flights as of January 10, 2022. Superior class tickets will cost roughly double those of economy class.

I placed a * next to lounge access because while that is a benefit of Superior Class tickets, all ITA Lounges remain closed (the carrier blames the pandemic). That’s a tragedy considering the coffee and food in these lounges is very good and a central value proposition to purchasing a business class ticket.

One of the things I loved about Alitalia was its pre-security airport lounges in the check-in area, which included freshly-baked croissants and lovely cappuccino in the mornings: a perfect way to begin your day.

ITA has not specified what that enhanced catering onboard will look like on domestic flights, but the carrier’s intra-Europe catering has resembled that of its predecessor Alitalia (for example, lasagna for lunch).

In terms of award redemptions, ITA Airways remains part of SkyTeam and frequent flyers can now use partner award miles to redeem business class awards in “Superior Class.”

CONCLUSION

ITA is now offering a domestic business class product called Superior Class. However, when considering such a ticket remember that ITA lounges remain shut down, at least for now.

I still find it amusing that Alitalia finally gave up the ghost late last year and the story was almost universally ignored lol.

I find it sad, Richard. There are a lot of dedicated Alitalia employees who are now out of a job. Years ago I flew for an airline that went out of business. It was a very painful experience that I wouldn’t wish on anyone.
