I know life as a trans hasn’t been easy for you, you struggled but came so far along that we believed nothing would stop you. I’ve been following Kayleigh on social media since she made her transition and the news hits me hard. I could see that Scott was crying out in pain in social media posts over the last few months. She became disgruntled about her job and discouraged over other aspects of her personal life.
My heart breaks for her. I never met Kayleigh. I never had the chance to fly with her. And yet even as one of her thousands of social media followers from a distance, I feel responsible for not doing more. I saw pain and did not reach out. We cannot possibly save the world, but we can minister to those around us in need. I wish I had done more.
Whoever you are, wherever you are, there are better alternatives to suicide. This irreversible step is not the right path. I pray for peace and comfort for all who knew and loved Kayleigh.
It is rather sad. Always hard or impossible to know what someone else is dealing with. Often people look healthy on the outside but have a lot of hidden medical or emotional issues.
Somehow I started following this one FA on twitter a few years ago. The person seems like a train wreck. Way too much drinking, puts their entire value into relationships and when they fail they can’t handle it.

Years ago there was this ex-baseball pitcher who everyone liked but something certainly was bothering him because he committed suicide in his 50s and didn’t have any financial or medical issues from all accounts. Really stunned a lot of people.

There are far too many people cheerleading the Trans bandwagon who don’t understand mental issues, specifically gender dysphoria. They incorrectly assume that the four-to-five times higher suicide rate among the transitioned is due to not transitioning soon enough, or “hate” for the transitioned, when it is actually because these unfortunate people’s true underlying issues were not addressed. And these cheerleaders, who are complicit in these deaths, go merrily on their narcissistic, clueless, virtue-signalling way.
I implore those of you ready to reply with a condemnation of my comment to please, please take the time to do a deep dive into the literature about gender dysphoria, and see how often it is disappears when the person leaves adolescence.

JH has a point. In a lot of ways it’s inevitable. Mental illness is real and it’s genetic. There is no long lasting cure. Many who transition still are in turmoil and don’t feel right. Sure, we all hope those who transition are like Caitlyn Jenner who seems to be at peace and happy, but at least half will not find the cure to their issue after transitioning. Some even de transitioned to get back to a better place. Whether someone should go through the hormone treatments and surgery is something that should be deliberated on over years. I hope we all can admit young children and teens who are undergoing natural hormone changes should not be transitioning before being mature enough to make the decision.

The largest cause of suicide among trans people is the hateful rhetoric like yours 24/7. It takes a heavy toll. Because this is , believe it or not, a physiological condition, and not a psychological one you can’t “therapy” it away. The person you’re practicing mental torture on is fighting for their lives. Every therapist of repute will tell you that the best treatment is positive support… or simply not being ugly to people with a condition you may not fully understand.

I worked with Kayleigh. She was awesome. It was the first time I worked aft galley on the 777. I was so nervous. She was so nice and helpful. I had no idea she was transgender. All I saw was a beautiful woman so confident. I was a little jealous to be honest. RIP Kayleigh.

I flew with Kayleigh once. She was wonderful and kind. My heart is so heavy for her passing and for her loved ones’ loss. May she rest in peace.
I will not soon find peace in this though. United Airlines failed Kayleigh. I can guarantee they did not offer adequate support after making her the face of an international and campaign. United takes bright, social, diverse people and puts them in a lonely, physically and mentally taxing, and conformiy-centric job. They seem at every turn to weaken or outright violate our union contracts. Their most recent contract negotiations have highlighted plainly what they think of their employees.
Kayleigh’s last post before her note was bringing forward the fact that United was seeking, in contract negotiations, to make it so that if you drew disability, your life insurance would not be paid out if you died.
Many trans people have to use disability benefits during recovery if they have gender confirming surgery. That would mean that United was saying, we accept you as long as you forfeit your life insurance payout.
While they were publicly patting themselves on the back for their LGBTQ+ acceptance, they were privately refusing to allow non-binary and gender-nonconforming flight attendants to wear uniforms that felt comfortable yet professional. We were told that we should be grateful that there would probably be gender-neutral pieces in the next set of uniforms, in 5-10 years.
United failed Kayleigh miserably and is continuing on this dreadful path. A point system set up for failure with middle management bullies to enforce unreasonable expectations. This airline lost its way. Rest in peace sweet Kayleigh your memory will be eternal.

This is truly a tragedy. To Natalie and her many friends, I am sorry for your loss. I am even more sorry that our country lacks the mental health services that might have made a difference, that might have given her another option instead of taking her life. We need to do better.
My own family has been touched by suicide – the spouses of 2 of my first cousins, so I certainly understand the tragic aftermath of something like this.
Let’s all make an extra effort to reach out to a friend or loved one who might be struggling with mental health issues. That phone call, text, or invitation to coffee might make a difference.

Lets talk about how her company denied MULTIPLE requests for leave. She told me she needed a break from flying and she got NO reprieve. They posted her all online to promote their “equal” promotions and to share her story towards their brand. But when she needed a break and kept requesting time off she wasnt given help. The company follows her online, likes her posts when she promoted them FREE, but youre telling me they didnt notice her decline? Wake up, companies dont care when it comes down to it. She started to be vocal online about her company turning their back on her when she wasn’t their puppet. Even we saw it at other airlines. They have said nothing about this still publically.
Kayleigh was a great person. My heart aches for her sister and mother, in particular.
Under Kirbys UA, we are being more and more reduced to just a number – an anonymous cog in the wheel. Permanently reduced staffing levels, cost cutting at every turn, embarrassing soft product (catering still a disaster), punitive work rules. No matter how much you have done for the company or for our guests, you are still just a number and a cost.
I keep hearing Momo stories of our flying partners that have been treated terribly by the company. There was recently a flight attendant that needed open-heart surgery during a layover, and recovery time. the company scrutinized the number of post surgical recovery days that had occurred before returning to the US, and ultimately charged back two nights of hotel accommodation to the FA via paycheck. If that doesn’t show heartless people practices, I don’t know what does.
As for the social media team? Those are low level communications interns.
I’m worried about the financial miss – FAs are always the first group screwed over.

Fun fact – When they do that surgery, they patient is left with a “Neovagina” – essentially a wound made to look like a vagina. It has to be be manually dilated with lubricant and a firm object for a couple hours a day, Up to two years post-surgery, and periodically after that. Otherwise, the wound can close.

Just read her posts, the answers are all there. She worked a trip the day before her suicide, got back late, had another assignment aligned the next morning. Being a flight attendant isn’t as glamorous as it seems especially when you’re treated like dirt by passengers that are just mad the company is cutting corners because they’re trying to save money while constantly putting fear in their employees. Point system, even getting injured on the job you’re treated like you’re the problem. RIP.
Was she forced to work at UAL? When someone’s job no longer works for them, they leave and get another job that makes them happy. She could have done the same. Constantly demanding time off isn’t really a hallmark of an exemplary employee. And to back up my previous comment, is it really safe to put a mentally unstable person in such a critical position in flight? Flight attendants constantly remind us how crucial they are to the flight so I’d think it’s only reasonable that they be of sound mind and character. It’s clear that she was no longer eligible to do the job it that were the case. Perhaps she was just fishing for a disability settlement.

In most any other job, if it’s not working for you , then you move on and find something that does. No one and, certainly, no business company owes anything to anyone.

Oh no, ma’am, you will not catch me slipping telling you (who are you even?) where I work. But I’ve been in the business for over 20 years so I might have a thing or two (or twenty) to bring to the convo. Let’s take this sad event out of the equation for a moment. That does not negate my (and many others’) claim that if one has a job that doesn’t work for them, then they have all the right to up and move on. The FA work group (of which I’m a part of) tend to think that the company owes them something when, darlings, all a company owes its employees are the benefits agreed to and remuneration for hours worked. In fact, there are plenty of resources offered in which the vast majority do not elect to partake (EAP, Ginger, etc). The FA group tends to say (and you darn well know this is the case): “I just come to work, work my flights, and go home.” And even “They [the airline] want me to read my emails? Are they paying me for that?” I could keep going.
The point though is that all that for all the griping of the work rules that the union negotiated for their members, these gripes only come from lower seniority levels of the workgroup — when you can hold SIN or CPT, you’re not worried about any of those issues (although they may be empathetic). It’s easy to place “the company” as the bogeyman because it’s the simplest point on which to place blame.
At the end of the day, since the beginning of the industry, FAs have been sold a “lifestyle” that allows an easy escape from their individual realities however the thing that few actually realize is that one can never run away from their reality outside of their work — it will always be present. Thus, there exists a sense that being at work should be completely free of difficulties and work perfectly, but there is not a single profession that doesn’t come without challenges. Donna, United Airlines did not exploit Kayleigh. I was in contact with her when she came out at United, and she was thrilled with all the support she received from across the 80-90K employees. New Hire schedules wrre hardly grueling during the pandemic, very few flight attendants flew over 50 hours a month, but of course were paid their minimal guarantee. The stress during the pandemic was there was not enough flying to go around, and anyone wanting to step back from flying could take a leave. UAL did not fail Kayleigh, it is a company that understands and welcomes a diverse group of employees including trans employees.

My heart breaks for this family. Kayleigh is no longer in pain it is now her family who carries her pain. This was a beautiful women suffering from a heartbreaking disease. She has earned her wings and is flying high. Being a FA can be a lonely job. You have to be upbeat all day while people and your company are brutal and demanding. When your on a layover or done it can be physically and mentally draining,leaving some feeling isolated. Whatever her reason was it was a hugh loss for the people who loved her. Seems obvious that one could just look at the genitalia. You’re either a boy or a girl, right? Well, not always. Although it’s rare, many people are born with ambiguous genitalia. The OB/GYN and the pediatrician are simply unable to determine the sex. Historically, in consultation with the family, a sex would be assigned. Turns out that often as not the child would ultimately identify with the sex they were not assigned.
So it must be the chromosomes. The 23rd pair in humans is designated XX in females and XY in males. The Y chromosome determines male characteristics, so you are either a boy or a girl, right? Well, not always.
In embryology the default setting is female. The Y chromosome normally triggers male development. Ever heard of testicular feminization syndrome, now more properly referred to as androgen insensitivity syndrome? A normal XY baby is born with essentially normal female external genitalia. The body simply does not respond to androgens associated with the Y chromosome. As the child grows and enters puberty there will be normal female breast development and other feminine characteristics. Unless genetic testing has been done at some point, the abnormality is not discovered until the teenage daughter presents to the doctor with concerns that menstruation has not started. Examination will reveal that the vagina ends in a blind pouch, no uterus, and undescended testes. They are often very feminine – cheerleaders, beauty pageant contestants, etc.
Nearly everybody is a normal XX or XY, has anatomy to match, and is perfectly at peace with themselves. But not everybody. Several studies have identified how the sexual diversity between men and women does not exclusively involve the genitals, but also the development of different brain areas. And just as genitals can be ambiguous, or not match what XY would predict,so can the brain in some instances develop in a different direction than the genitals. Animal studies suggest this is likely due to atypical levels of sex hormones in the womb.
Studies in the human brain have involved an area of the limbic system known as the nucleus of the terminal stria. The volume of this area appears to be influenced by the stimulation of sex hormones during brain development, and in men the volume of this area is greater than in women. Back in the olden days when mental health professionals were really professionals and not communist supporters, before the left took over psychology, people wanting to change identities had to see a few shrinks and prove they are of sound mind. Yes I say shrinks, my dad was a shrink, a psychologist, and I teasingly always called him a shrink. I have the utmost respect for psychologists and psychiatrists, it’s a difficult career and it’s not at all easy. Back when Drs wouldn’t treat you without the shrinks bill of health we had very few trans people. Now, no shrinks allowed and they’d green light you anyway, they’re “woke”. In non nuts speak woke means mentally ill.
Many can relate to this, you have an affair, you never tell your spouse and stay together happily, if you never talk to anyone about what happened, it will return like bad south of the border food but in a different manner. Sleeping problems, sexual problems, depression, etc. Same for people changing their body. Trans have some of the highest suicide rates out there, even after they change because its their mind thats ill. You can make flags, parades, laws, whatever, they are still ill and a severe suicide risk.

I personally don’t care if the reproductive organs you were born with match how you dress, how your see yourself or how you would like others to see you. I do care if you see money fall out of my pocket, you yell out to me to let me know rather than waiting for me to walk away and then taking it. Or, if you see me at a door and my hands are full, you immediately ask me to wait a minute while you hold the door open for me. I care if you are honest and if you are kind to others.
A speaker at a conference talked about suicide and made two points that have stuck with me.
The first is that he interviewed more than a dozen people who survived an attempted suicide by jumping off of the Golden Gate Bridge. He said they all had one thing in common, once they actually jumped, they changed their mind and wanted to live. Not a few or most of them, but all of them. The second point was what he found talking with the family and friends of loved ones who committed suicide. All of them carried pain with them. All thinking they missed a sign, there was something they could have done, something they missed. They felt this way from the moment they found out, months and years later, and probably will for the rest of their lives. He said this taught him that “Suicide does not end the pain, it only transfers it to those you love”. I honestly don’t believe that the person about to commit suicide realizes this. There is no way I can ever imagine the pain they feel at that moment, it may be overwhelming.
Many are leaving comments, both positive and negative, based on their personal or religious beliefs. Here are two of mine. Love God and love thy neighbor, and, I don’t have God’s wisdom. I don’t always keep myself in check, but I do try. With that said, if this persons life’s choices don’t agree with God’s plans for how we should live, that is between God and them.
When I read Kayleigh’s last words, they say a lot about her. There is no anger, no hate, only caring. Kayleigh made a choice to list the names of those she cared about and loved. And her last words were of hoping to be reunited with someone she lost. Hopefully she was envisioning that moment, that meeting, as she transitioned to a better place, without the pain.
I hope that together, Kayleigh’s family, friends, and God, can provide strength and love to support each other.

A young person is dead, and he wanted it so, what pain this represents. It is not love to encourage a person to believe what is not true, not objectively true and can’t be true no matter how badly they want to believe it. Suicide accompanies people who are lost in confusion over who and what they are. It is not love to tell them lies, it is not hate to not want this social contagion to take more young victims, because it is harming so many.
But we shouldn’t resort to really hateful insults, a young person is dead, leaving behind hurting survivors and family. They will always blame themselves. It happened to me, I know, you never forget, what did I miss.
The truth should always be said. You can’t change the chromosomes, they stay the same. This poor soul looked like an attractive woman, by all appearances, had every reason to be happy with his choice, but he killed himself anyway, because there are serious psychological problems beneath the surface. I’m sad he’s gone and you should be too. Please God, have mercy on him. You know his pain better than anyone. Who loved him here on earth. Who helped him find who he really was so he could accept it and live his best life. Was there anyone. Nobody knows the pain of his experience unless they lived it or loved someone who lived it.
And if strong words is what it takes to discourage this kind of destructive behavior from spreading to others, then so be it. But for the moment, schools, government officials and society are all working in lock step to affirm this destructive, perverted sexual behavior by calling men and women equal and destroying numerous generations of very confused young people intentionally. That is a crime that Should be severely punished.
