Flight Carrying 85 Plumbers Forced to Divert…Due to Lavatory Problems

A flight carrying 85 plumbers was forced to divert after the onboard lavatories malfunctioned and could not be repaired. How’s that for irony?

Norwegian Air Flight 1156 from Oslo to Munich was forced to turn around just past the Swedish border, burn fuel, and finally land back at Oslo on 01/27. The issue: a “technical fault” with the onboard lavatories.

Even with the offer of assistance from the plumbers onboard, all from a Norwegian plumbing company called Rørkjøp, the problem could not be fixed.

Upon landing in Oslo, engineers addressed the issue. The lavatories required servicing from the exterior of the aircraft, so I am guessing it was a septic tank or drainage issue. Whatever the precise nature of the problem, the flight was soon back in the air and eventually reached Munich.

Norwegian stated—

Flight DY1156from Oslo to Munich on Saturday 27 January returned to Oslo due to a technical fault with the toilet.

The aircraft was repaired and continued with the flight later that day.

We would like to thank passengers for their patience and would like to apologise for the inconvenience.

CONCLUSION

Why did the plane have to divert in the first place? Couldn’t it have been serviced in Munich? Anything is possible, but Norwegian understandably wanted to bring back the aircraft to its home base. That way, the aircraft could be repaired by Norwegian employees, not contracted workers. Furthermore, if the aircraft had to be taken out of service it would be easier to find a replacement from a hub than an out-station.

But talk about irony…
