Delta Vs. United: The LAX Taco Wars

Matthew Klint Posted onNovember 13, 2019November 14, 2023 13 Comments

Two airlines. Two lounges. Two taco bars. Who wins at LAX, United or Delta?

Regular readers of the blog know that I love tacos. Like, love to the point of eating tacos multiple days per week. What can I say? I was born and raised in Los Angeles…

I’m partial to the Mexican or Tex-Mex variant, but there are all sorts of tacos. One type of taco that is quickly gaining popularity in LA is the Korean beef taco. LA has a sizable Korean population and all the time I see new Korean taco trucks popping up.

So it is quite fitting that United and Delta, two airlines with hubs in Los Angeles, have introduced tacos to their respective clubs.

United has added Korean beef tacos to its Terminal 7 lounge. While the toppings pictured below are intended for the soup, you can add ingredients to build up a nice a taco.

Meanwhile, Delta has added Mexican tacos to its Terminal 2 lounge. Toppings include shredded chicken in a red sauce, cotija cheese, cilantro, lime, and pineapple.

Delta also has tortilla chips with a beautiful verde sauce or hot queso cheese sauce.

I greatly preferred the Delta tacos, but kudos to both United and Delta for thinking outside the soup, salad, and sandwich box to offer not just “real” food, but real LA food.

By the way, Delta and United are not the only games in town. Both the oneworld and Star Alliance lounges in the Tom Bradley International Terminal offers tacos (less regularly in the Star Alliance lounge).

Don’t forget the taco cart/stand in the OW business lounge. It’s pretty decent, too. I’ll gladly take off from the QF F lounge just for the tacos. The whole salt-and-pepper squid craze can’t hold a candle to a good al carbon street taco.

Indeed. And occasionally in the Star Alliance lounge!

Come to Dallas and we’ll show you how tacos are really made. 🙂

Which is actually I think one of the (many) missed opportunities on AA’s side. Imagine the goodwill if they put a taco bar in the DFW Flagship Lounge.

Very glad for taco options, I particularly enjoyed the tostadas availble in the UC during breakfast hours.

Sitting in the LAX term2 Delta Skyclub, finishing up my Delta taco, when I pulled up this post. Had to laugh. I think the United tacos aren’t half bad (have had those as well), but the Delta Taco’s came via my AMEX plat card – which is such a great deal. Skyclub is busy but not overcrowded.

Looks pretty crappy. Last thing I would eat before getting on a flight.

    Matthew,
I just discovered your blog and I compliment you on extensive coverage on a wide variety of flight travel topics. I am a United devotee based on where I live. I would like to see you review the ALL the UA Clubs you have visited. Most of them really suck with food options, United’s hub in Houston being the worst. It’s great if you’re a rabbit, but horrible for humans, unless you thin bean soup is a hearty meal.
Recent upgrades to the food choices at the United Clubs in Honolulu and Guam make them my favorite. LAX is the best Stateside club.
Keep writing; I’ll keep reading. Well done!
    Peter
