Recently, I wrote about Lufthansa’s A380 shuffle at LAX. The carrier has swapped aircraft, sending the A380 to Munich to A340 to Frankfurt. With the winter schedule now filed, Frankfurt will reclaim the A380 in late October.
Lufthansa not only operates out of Munich, but is a partial owner of an expansive new international terminal. MUC is undoubtedly a great airport and underutilized at the moment. By upgrading Munich flights to A380s and downgrading Frankfurt flights, Lufthansa had hoped to grow its Munich hub.
But Frankfurt is still Lufthansa’s fortress hub and also a primary connection point for many partner airlines in Europe and around the world.
During the summer, Lufthansa will send a 747-8 and A40-600 daily to Frankfurt and A380-800 to Munich. But Friday, October 26, 2018 will be the last day Lufthansa sends an A380 from LAX to Munich. On October 27th, both the Frankfurt and Munich flights will utilize an A340, and on October 28th, LAX-FRA will be operated by an A380 once again, and LAX-MUC an A340.
The schedule currently runs through early March and we don’t know if Lufthansa will do another A380 shuffle at LAX next spring. My flight from LAX to MUC last week was lightly filled, though it was a Monday in early spring…

CONCLUSION
I enjoyed my connection through Munich last week. I also love the smoothness, quietness, and roominess of the A380. Consequently, I am happy to see it this aircraft will transition back to Frankfurt this autumn, at least from LAX, since I more frequently need to be in FRA.
What do you make of the Lufthansa A380 Los Angeles shuffle? Is Munich Airport in trouble?

It’s never a bad thing to see a 747 at LAX 🙂
Typo? ” A40-600 daily”
On the same date, SFO will be served with the A380 from Munich and the A340-600 will operate FRA-SFO.
