My visit to the Hong Kong United Club brought back happy memories from decades past and is one of the best United Clubs in the system.
United Club Hong Kong Review (HKG)
Prior to my flight to Bangkok, I had about an hour in United’s HKG United Club, which shuttered during the pandemic but re-opened in 2025. I first visited this lounge nearly 20 years ago and it was nice to return after so many years.
Location + Hours + Access
After clearing security, prepare for a long walk (my preferred method) or train ride to the lounge, which is near gate 60 in terminal 1. You’ll find the lounge on level L7: follow the signs for the United Club and AMEX lounge and you’ll find the up an elevator.
This is a Star Alliance Gold lounge so all Star Alliance Gold passengers departing from Hong Kong in any class of service enjoyed access (plus one guest). Star Alliance business class (no guests) and first class passengers (one guest) also can access this lounge, as can United Club members and Chase United Club Visa holders.
While access for Star Alliance Gold status holders from United Airlines (Premier Gold or higher) is limited to traveling on a same-day international itinerary, that applies to all passengers departing HKG.
The lounge is open from 6:00 am to 11:30 pm daily.
Seating
This is an atrium-style lounge with views of the departures gates directly below and aircraft through the floor-to-ceiling windows. Seating is clustered into four areas with a buffet and self-serve bar located roughly in the middle.
The rear of the lounge also features three workstations with desks and swivel chairs and three phone rooms:
Food + Drink
I was there at 7:00 am and there was a respectable breakfast spread available that included:
- Scrambled eggs
- Hardboiled eggs
- Baked beans
- Cooked tomatoes
- Fried egg noddles
- Sasuage
- Bacon
- Bagels
- Toast
- Muffins
- Croissants
- Danish
- Cold cuts (ham and chicken slices)
- Yogurt
- Cereal
- Overnight oats
- Fruit
The full bar was also open and self-serve, which is quite different from United Clubs in the USA and LHR which all have staffed bars (and charges for top-shelf liquor). Here, everything was complimentary, though I did not see any Champagne (just Prosecco). A sign warned guests to drink responsibly…
There was also coffee, tea, water, soft drinks, and juice available and the coffee, while not great, was better than the Singapore Airlines Lounge (but Cathay Pacific offers significantly better coffee in its first and business class lounge).
As pat of the refresh, United has new cups and plates and I really liked the coffee cups!
Restrooms + Showers
Restroom and shower suites are available…with very long waits for showers after the arrival of the Los Angeles and San Francisco flights (with many passengers connecting onward on United to Bangkok or Ho Chi Minh City).
Service
Staff roamed this lounge watching passengers like hawks…as soon as dishes were finished, they were collected…dity cups, bowls, and glasses, never mounted up in this lounge.
CONCLUSION
I was nice to visit this lounge after so many years…this lounge is better than the Singapore Airlines SilverKris Lounge (which I will review next) and quite comfortable, with a respectable section of food and self-serve drinks. If you’re looking for a shower, though, note that the wait times were very long.
Hello Matthew. One thing I find disappointing abut many airline lounges in Asia, including this United lounge at HKG, is that they have no ceilings, per se. They are open to the airport proper, with all its announcements, crowd noise, etc. This reduces any sense of relaxation or calm that an ‘enclosed’ club would have.
