Lufthansa is one step closer toward offering a more competitive business class product on its A380 with the debut of a new business class seat on its superjumbo jet.
First Lufthansa A380 With New Business Class Takes Off
Lufthansa has debuted its first Airbus A380 (registration D-AIMC) featuring an all-new business class cabin, a long-overdue upgrade for the carrier’s flagship superjumbo. The first retrofitted aircraft entered service on April 23, 2026 operating from Munich (MUC) to Los Angeles (LAX) on LH452.
Lufthansa’s existing A380 business class product was badly outdated, with a dense 2-2-2 layout and limited privacy. For a premium-focused airline that has spent years talking about modernization, the A380 lagged badly behind competitors…even British Airways’ odd 8-across seating that at least had direct aisle access at each seat.
What Is New?
The refreshed A380 does not get Lufthansa’s Allegris product. Instead, Lufthansa selected the Thompson Aero Vantage XL seat in a 1-2-1 configuration.

That means every passenger now gets direct aisle access, which alone is a massive improvement over the current setup. Lufthansa says the new seats offer a width of 58 cm, beds of at least two meters, Bluetooth connectivity, larger screens, and adjustable privacy dividers.
Business Class capacity drops from 78 seats to 68 seats, a sensible tradeoff if the result is a seat people actually want to book instead of actively avoid.
Economy class, premium economy class, and first class will remain unchanged, at least for now.
Why Lufthansa Chose A Different Seat
Rather than wait for Allegris certification drama and further delays (after all, the A350 was bad enough), Lufthansa appears to have taken the practical route: use an off-the-shelf product that can be installed quickly across the eight-aircraft A380 fleet.
That seems logically pragmatic to me.
It’s also good news in signaling that the A380 will be around for many years…it’s not my favorite jet, but it’s my second-favorite (to the 747-8) and is so quiet…it’s almost always a pleasure to fly.
The A380 remains an important aircraft for Lufthansa out of Munich. The new A380 will be rotated on routes including:
- Boston (BOS)
- Delhi (DEL)
- Los Angeles (LAX)
- Mumbai (BOM)
- Washington (IAD)
All eight A380s are scheduled to be retrofitted by mid-2027.
The new seat should be far more competitive than what it replaces, but it also creates yet another Lufthansa longhaul business class variant. Lufthansa now has a confusing mix of Allegris seats, legacy seats, retrofits, and aircraft-specific products depending on fleet type. That inconsistency is becoming part of the Lufthansa brand!
Since only 1/8 A380s are currently retrofitted, it will certainly be the luck of the draw if you end up on one. The next aircraft, D-AIMH, is undergoing refurbishment in Dresden. The process takes about 12 weeks to complete.

CONCLUSION
Lufthansa’s first retrofitted A380 is an important moment for the carrier and addresses a glaring weakness in the airline’s premium product. It also suggests longevity for the aircraft in the Lufthansa fleet.
No, it is not Allegris (though for some passengers, that will be a win), but direct aisle access, more privacy, and a modern seat on the A380 are exactly what should have happened years ago. Better late than never.

Yes, nothing revolutionary, but still a nice upgrade for business class passengers flying on this plane.
Wish they flew a380 to NYC, but at least we still get 747.
An elegant and efficient refurbishment for the 16.2-year-old LH A380-800 and its passengers.
The German flag carrier’s friendly superjumbos will also undergo routine maintenance at the EFW facility in Dresden.
Let’s add that the Thompson Aero Vantage XL seats are used by a number of international carriers, including QF, on its A380s. The seat is also already familiar with some LH passengers who have flown on second-hand B787 Dreamliners that the airline acquired from the PR, which also feature this seat.
