Review: Lufthansa Senator Lounge B (Non-Schengen) – Frankfurt (FRA)

The Lufthansa Senator Lounge B (in the Non-Schengen area) of Frankfurt Airport has always been one of my favorite FRA lounges and was a godsend after a long overnight in economy class.

After arriving from Addis Ababa, I proceeded directly to this lounge in search of coffee and orange juice. Unlike some of Lufthansa’s other lounges in Frankfurt, this one offers barista-made coffee and fresh-squeezed orange juice.

Entering, I proceeded to the bar where the coffee and O-Saft were and was elated to get my fix…two cups of each.

Naughty, naughty…

The breakfast spread was excellent (essentially unchanged over the last 15 years I have been visiting it) and I loved fresh German wholegrain bread with quark on top…a delicious treat (yes, I even skipped my usual eggs and had this instead).

I love that this lounge still has real newspapers and magazines…so old school…and was very happy to spend my Frankfurt layover here prior to my flight to Chicago.

My prior (and more detailed) review from 2024 is below (and 2018 review below that).

Lufthansa Senator Lounge Frankfurt Review

The venerable Lufthansa Senator Lounge in the B Gates area of Frankfurt Terminal 1 remains one of my favorite lounges at the airport.

Lufthansa Senator Lounge B Frankfurt (FRA) Review

I’ve used this lounge so many times over the years, but it has been awhile since I updated my review. Stepping off my Singapore Airlines Suites flight from New York, this was the lounge I was directed to for my brief layover before the flight continued to Singapore.

Although the Lufthansa First Class Lounge was nearby, that lounge is reserved only for first class passengers traveling on Lufthansa or SWISS as well as for Miles & More HON Circle Members and American Express Centurion cardholders.

But I do not mind this B43 Senator lounge because it offers barista-made coffee and fresh-squeezed orange juice, which is all I was looking for after gorging myself on the Singapore Airlines flight.

Head over to “The Lights” bar for the coffee service. The fresh-squeezed orange juice used to be there, but now is located with other drinks at the buffet during the morning hours.

a cup of coffee and a glass of orange juice on a white table

I find the food in this lounge to be quite excellent. I did not eat during my last visit, but I am including some picture from a couple other recent visits and you can expect high-quality soups, salads, sandwiches, and hot main courses…and even a great selection of desserts.

I’d rate the food in this lounge better than most business class food onboard a flight.

Oddly, this lounge has a small first class section, though it was once again reserved exclusively for Lufthansa First Class passengers even though an actual First Class Lounge was located a short walk away.

My guess is this was a holdover from when the first class lounge was still closed.

In short, this is a sold lounge with great food and drinks for Star Alliance Gold flyers.

My original review, published on September 3, 2018, is below.

The Lufthansa Senator Lounge in the B Gates area of Terminal 1 is my favorite of the three Senator Lounges at FRA.

It is located next to B43 and open daily from 6:00 A.M. to 10:00 P.M. An agent will verify your boarding pass at a small desk outside the front entrance. If you are a Star Alliance Gold member, you may be asked to produce your card.

Once inside, you’ll proceed upstairs where you’ll encounter sliding double doors leading to the actual lounge.

Lufthansa Senator Lounge Frankfurt (FRA) Bar

The “City Lights” bar offers a very generous selection of alcoholic drinks, but has two things I like even more: freshly brewed coffee and freshly squeezed orange juice (and other juices). That’s what I enjoyed.

But the alcoholic selection is also quite wide, with a menu of cocktails available for order. All alcohol in the lounge is complimentary.

As long as we are on the subject of alcohol, the lounge also has an expansive selection of self-serve beer, wine, and schnapps. Soft drinks and water as well.

As for the food, you can count on a full meal here if you so desire. Selections included tremendous German breads, soup, salad, hot dishes like chicken and dumplings, and many desserts.

Lufthansa Senator Lounge Frankfurt (FRA) Seating

The lounge emptied out around 2:00 P.M. and remained almost empty until I left at 3:30 P.M. The lounge seats at least 200 comfortably. Power outlets (Euro German) are located strategically within arm’s reach of most chairs. Wi-Fi is complimentary and fast.

Newspapers and magazines are also located nearby:

If you do need to leave the lounge and come back, lockers are available.  Each locker has an individual key.

Lufthansa Senator Lounge Frankfurt (FRA) Spa

Lufthansa recently opened a spa in this Senator Lounge. Unfortunately, there are no complimentary treatments and prices are rather steep. Here’s the spa menu:

a white paper with purple text

a menu of massage and massage therapy

a brochure with a woman's face

Smokers have a large smoking room in the back corner of the lounge.

If you care to rest, the lounge has a sleeping room with four beds. Bedding is provided.

Showers are available inside the spa. Restrooms are located adjacent to the spa.

CONCLUSION

This is an excellent Star Alliance Gold lounge with comfortable seating and a nice selection of food and drink. If you have Star Gold status and are flying economy class, I recommend you eat here prior to your flight.

I love the grammar hawks who seem to get joy out of pointing out occasional spelling or punctuation issues. Get a life people – if you don’t like the work, you can have your money back, guaranteed.

Matthew, I’ve enjoyed your writing tremendously this past year. If you need someone to proofread your work before posting it, I”d be willing to help out on a voluntary basis. Full disclosure: I don’t have the credentials for the job, but I have a good grasp of the English language. Spotting grammar and spelling mistakes fall within the area of my expertise. Either way, thanks for your posts!

Clearly the first class terminal is better but this also looks amazing. How do you compare the food and drink between the two? Would you judge the quality of the offerings to be comparable?

What I love about the First Class Terminal and First Class Lounges is the a la carte dining with my favorite filet with French fries and car service to the aircraft. There is also a much more extensive buffet and bar. But this is a very solid Star Gold / business class lounge that I would have no problem spending an entire day in.

What are the flights that leave from the B gates? I’ve been to FRA many times, but I don’t think ever in this terminal. I’m almost always in A or Z, and I don’t like either one of the Senator lounges there. This one looks like it has much better food&drink options.

There are LH flights that leave from B. While it is mostly partner carriers here, it seems Lufthansa’s Middle East destinations depart from here.

The LH Senator lounges at FRA and MUC are all good in my experience. And I’ve never seen them overcrowded. They are why I really don’t mind connecting in one of those places.

No day passes are available. Day passes in Terminal 1 are only available at the Luxx Lounge. I would recommend a day room at the Hilton or Sheraton.

Surprised people have not noticed over-crowding. I am not a frequent LH/LX group traveller and with FRA being one of the main hubs, lounge quality is one of the reasons.

I agree with Vincent Palmire’s comments – they are very commonly unkempt; inadequately staffed; woefully under-staffed and generally poor in comparison to competitors (eg since when is a pay as you go spa ‘normal’ in a business class lounge? May be in the US, but nowhere else).

They also have to rank among some of the finest examples of dentist’s waiting room architecture I have ever seen. Perhaps it’s a German-Swiss thing… but it definitely isn’t a ‘luxury’ thing…

Our experience is that if you are a non-white Star Alliance Gold member travelling business class is that the unfriendly Lufthansa personnel will deny you access to the Senator’s lounge. So much for having flown enough for life-time gold status and United 1K every year. Lufthansa will bump you from your reserved in planes, too, while lying about the reason. Not the white guy with lower flight status, same ticket (our friend), just the Asian guy in the group! Multiple times now and multiple times denied access to lounges based on bogus, made up on the fly rules by Lufthansa ground personnel.

Is someone able confirm that they still have cordoned off the bar area for First Class only (it was in February 2022)? Or was this a temporary thing due to Covid?

Thanks Matthew. Curious as to which lounges will be nicest to try out on a 5 hour overlay as a *G passenger arriving in the very early morning from JHB going to VIE on OS.
Going by your reviews I’ll try out the Canada Maple Leaf lounge and take a shower. Was hoping the Senator B lounge had barrista coffee again 😉 but I guess I’ll pop into the Business lounge at A26 for that.

I have just realised that I haven’t flown from/via FRA in quite a while – all my recent LH group flights have been via MUC or BRU. On the non-Schengen side you are probably better off in the AC lounge, or at least that used to be the case before the pandemic.

I don’t think so. I find the AC lounge inferior.

If I arrive to FRA in Lufthansa F, and continue on say Singapore F, can I use the FCT or the FCL? Or just the Senator?

In that case, as an arriving LH first class passenger, you can use LH FCL.

When was this visit? The F section was in the B lounge because that FCL was closed. That’s no longer the case.

I accidentally wound up in this Senator Lounge back in February, while my buddy and I were wandering around during a very long layover. We happened in just in time to see a wooden barrel of Augustiner helles wheeled in and tapped. After enjoying a couple glasses each, we began our slog to our gate for our short hop to ZRH.

Lufthansa are facing an interesting dilema at the moment. They are celebrating 100 years since their foundation in 1926 but only when it suits them. They have moved to disassociate themselves with the operation of Lufthansa between 1930-1945 when an airline called Lufthansa, founded in 1926 worked hand in hand with the Nazi regime. They have done their best to prevent research into those times but when challenged recently stated that the current airline was founded in 1953 so quiet a few years to go until they can celebrate a history of 100 years!
