Will You Respect Mandatory Post-Travel Quarantine In USA?

Matthew Klint Posted onDecember 1, 2021November 14, 2023 81 Comments

a person lying on the floor next to a large virus

Simple question: if the United States imposes a seven-day self-quarantine requirement on incoming international airline passengers, will you respect it?

Yesterday we learned that the Biden Administration is considering several new measures that will tighten international travel. One of those measures is a mandatory week-long quarantine for those returning by air to the United States.

While the details are still under consideration and even being evaluated for legality, an announcement is expected on Thursday that will detail new testing and potentially new quarantine protocol.

But let’s be real. The United States is too vast and too populous for any meaningful enforcement mechanism. Thus, if such a policy is introduced (and right now it is only under consideration), it will be on the honor system. There likely would be penalties threatened, but practically impossible to enforce. It’s not like we are going to see the U.S. military or Transportation Security Administration (TSA) baggage screeners going door-to-door checking IDs. Even in liberal Los Angeles the LA County Sheriff’s Department refused to enforce the County’s mask ordinance.

There will also likely be loopholes, so to speak, not only for medical workers and first responders, but likely a broad categorical exemption for those whose occupation requires frequent travel.

Public health officials are not stupid (well, I suppose that is debatable) and already know there will be a subset of the population that will ignore any quarantine order. Still, their aim is not perfect compliance but limited compliance that they hope will still slow the spread of the virus.

So in a purely unscientific poll of world travelers on this blog, I am wondering if you intend to obey such an order. If you work in an office, will you be able to work from home for a week? Would the introduction of a post-flight quarantine cause you to cancel any upcoming trips or refrain from booking future trips?

Folks, the pandemic has become political and I understand that feelings are strong on both sides. For the benefit of everyone, though, please be respectful in the comments section. Please address the issue, not the other posters. And rather than just link to other webpages, take the time to develop your point here. Let’s keep the discussion respectful.

No one would mistake Trump for a gentleman, but it’s hardly as if Republicans have a monopoly on unsavory personal behavior. That being said, I don’t think creepiness should be a crime. Rape, of course, goes well beyond creepiness and yet Bill Clinton roams free, gallivanting around the world in carbon-spewing private jets. Believe all women (unless they are accusing your political candidate husband), amirite? Why is he not getting a taste of his own medicine in prison in that case?

As for quarantining, it is a joke. It was horribly enforced in Italy and the UK and it doesn’t work unless you are willing to commit to a totalitarian effort like they have in Australia. That will only push back the inevitable, though. The virus is gonna virus, so let (healthy) people get infected. It is the only way to herd immunity.

I will respect it in not doing any air travel for a week during “quarantine” to avoid drama or further spreading in crowded areas. As well it leaves you more vulnerable for someone to identify you via Pre Check and Global Traveler as to breaking quarantine. But will I sit at home in a dark room? Of course not. I will test after three days and if all clear will go about my normal routine and then wait another few days to fly.

Quarantine is designed to protect the society not the individual, as long as the individual faces more risk in society than society faces from the individual the quarantine process is pointless.

There is one word you used that is interesting: “returning”. International air travellers to the US are not always returning to the US. Though I could say that just recently I returned to the US after more than one and a half years … and have already returned back home to Germany.
It is one thing if someone lives in the US and is indeed returning back home. But a mandatory quarantine even for fully vaccinated people with a negative test would essentially mean a return of a travel ban. Does it make sense to fly to the US for vacationing there, when you are forced to quarantine for a week? Not really.
Or travelling for business reasons? Oh, you can come over, but you may not visit clients, business partner, …. just stay in your hotel.

As long as they keep allowing BinaxNOW Antigen tests and allow the test to be from when you originally depart, then whatever. I don’t care what else they try to do.

When your departure from origin (TBS-MUC-FRA-ATL) puts you immediately outside 24 hours entering the US then travel becomes a non-starter.

  13. MeanMeosh Reply

The quarantine requirement is unconstitutional, and will almost certainly be struck down in the courts like all of the other Brandon Administration mandates recently.

However, putting that aside, the answer is no. I will absolutely not comply with any quarantine. Enforcement would ultimately fall on the states, and my guess is my home state will simply refuse to enforce any such restrictions anyway. B brings up a good point, though – Biden’s handlers will do what they’ve traditionally done with mandates they know are likely illegal. They’ll simply lean hard on Big Business to enforce their wishes in true Fascitic fashion. If the Fortune 500 put in place mandatory quarantines for employees after international leisure travel, the net effect is exactly the same.

It’s worth remembering that the federal government, as it stands now, does NOT collect the tests of arriving passengers. Border control doesn’t ask for a test. The airlines look at the results of a negative test but have no ability to verify if the test is legit or not. Just about anyone can create a fake negative COVID test in about 5 minutes with Acrobat.

On second thought, I suppose I might comply, but only if forced. In the end, I suppose that’s what compels any action by citizens: force or the threat of it.

That’s why we must always preserve our right keep and bear weapons. The 2nd isn’t just about owning little handguns or rifles, but it’s about the public maintaining the means of forcing their will back on the government of the day using whatever weapons or other means are required.

  23. Ryan Reply
    December 1, 2021 at 12:33 pm

I would not comply. Prior to traveling to the US I would have already testers negative, worn masks and adhered to safety protocols for the entire journey, and in my case I fly business so there would be even less risk of exposure. All this in addition to being double vaccinated. And the people I’m visiting in the US have already recovered from corona.

A quarantine would be just another feel good measure to show that “something” is being done, but would have no impact whatsoever. The US already has a worse case count than where I would be traveling from and I guarantee that Omricon is already in the US. There’s no personal or societal benefit to quarantining, so I wouldn’t do it.

The reality is that our country is so entitled that there is zero chance of such rules being complied with. I will not quarantine, and this is why. I was in FL for three weeks. I can go to FL and not have to quarantine. I am going to Cozumel, where there is almost no COVID. I am flying business class to limit my exposure, and i am very careful in the airport. This summer I went to Belize where there was almost no COVID, and you could not stay at a hotel unless it met the GOLD standard, use a taxi unless it met Gold standard, or take a tour unless it met Gold standard. This meant all of these had to pass rigorous government inspections. And now you want me to quarantine after I ‘ve had 3 COVID shots, taken a COVID test 24 hours before flying home, been very careful on my entire trip, gone to a place with far less COVID than FL and where people are masking and sanitizing all the time? When after I arrive I will work in my office with few people and have limited exposure and be socially distant? I think not. Let the 40% of the people who haven’t gotten vaccinated get the shot, and practice social distancing.

The word “quarantine” has consistently been misused during this pandemic. A person is quarantined because they either HAVE a contagious disease or occasionally because they have had a clear, known exposure. This proposal is talking about confining people to their homes who have both been vaccinated against the disease AND have tested negative for it. That’s insane. I’m a huge NO as well.

I would not. I’m an expat who would be returning home for the holidays from a lower risk country than the US. I feel vaccination + booster and test 24 hours prior to travel is sufficient to minimize risk. Losing 1 of my 2 weeks with family is just not an acceptable option at this juncture.

Thank you for sharing. That is something I did not think about and makes me more against this quarantine idea.

In a word, yes. The answer to moronic regulation is not selective compliance – societies cannot function without compliance with a common set of social and legal norms. The answer is to vote out the clowns that have zero strategy for actually improving public health besides throwing Mr I Am Science on TV and making life miserable in hope that everyone will just stay home. The world is moving on from COVID. Time for clowns at Team Biden to get onboard with managing the problem rather than failed effort to eliminate an endemic infection.

No would be my answer with the information we have now about omnicron. The doctor who discovered this variant states so far they are only seeing mild symptoms and no uptick in hospitalizations. I am sure more data is needed to confirm this variant mostly causes mild illness, but governments are over panicking. I might be open to taking a third test a few days after return abroad but that’s about it.

For those in favor of the quarantine I ask, are you currently quarantining for a week after travel?

Why do you need the government to mandate it if you think it’s a good idea? Nobody would stop you from self imposing a quarantine.

As for me, honestly, I wouldn’t quarantine. I travel internationally on a regular basis and haven’t self quarantined thus far. Even before vaccines were widely available when it truly might have provided value. So why would I start now? It’s been 2 years and somehow the experts just now decide quarantine is a good idea. Right.

Yes, if it gets so bad that the govt/science say to quarantine, we will. We did it in the UK where we live half the year and everyone we know there was abiding. If anyone was observed breaking protocol they were criticized and avoided. When we returned home there, our friends had stocked our fridge and continued to drop bread by. My sister signed us up for the meal kits delivered to the door and we enjoyed learning to cook meals we had never tried before. All the groceries were delivering. Restaurants and pubs were closed and everyone wore masks to do essential tasks. The difference was it had not become political there; we all felt we were in it together, to protect ourselves and others. You can imagine the day the pubs opened for outside service how we all bundled up to celebrate! When vaccines became available, it was not necessary to spend hours online or phoning or driving long distances. You were simply notified when your category was up with a call or text giving you choices of venues and times. As the country opened up, we could download apps to scan the bar code of any establishment we entered. They were anonymous, but anyone testing positive entered it into their app, which automatically sent a ping to anyone whose app had been in the vicinity during the time calculated to be contagious. You would then test yourself for a number of days and self isolate until you were sure you had not contracted it. Did I mention we can pick up free boxes of 7 self tests at any pharmacy plus at popups outside groceries? My last comment is that I knew NO ONE who contracted or died from Covid-19 in London but I sadly cannot say the same for here in the US where we know several who did. One dear friend suffered 77 days on a ventilator and another who felt no need to get vaxxed because he was only 40 and healthy, died. So yes, if our scientists ask us to quarantine, I will.
