Former Miss USA and Miss Universe Olivia Culpo was stopped from boarding an American Airlines flight in Los Angeles until she covered up. Is this just another case of egregious selective enforcement of AA’s nebulous dress code?
Olivia Culpo Busted By American Airlines For Wardrobe Choice
Once again, American Airlines’ vague dress code was used by a gate agent to deny a female passenger from boarding a flight. This time, it was 29-year-old Olivia Culpo, the 2012 Miss USA and Miss Universe winner who has become a small-c celebrity through her pageantry, modeling, and dating of Nick Jonas, Tim Tebow, and currently Carolina Panthers running back Christian McCaffrey.
In an Instagram video posted by her sister Aurora, who was traveling with her, Culpo’s “offending” outfit is shown, a sports bra and shorts.
American Airlines’ dress code simply states:
Dress appropriately; bare feet or offensive clothing aren’t allowed.
A gate agent found her wardrobe choice to be inappropriate and told her to cover up. She ended up putting on her boyfriend’s sweater.
But here’s the twist: it appears that a black passenger on the same flight with a different body type but wearing a substantially similar outfit was not told to cover up. Check the video above.
If true, it just goes to show how arbitrary AA’s dress code policy is. As I’ve said before, the “I’ll know it when I see it” approach inevitably leads to conflict and leaves passengers at the mercy of flight attendants and gate agents, all of whom have different standards of what is “appropriate” or “offensive.” As for Culpo’s outfit, it covered up private parts and was not vulgar so I’m not sure what the problem is, even if I personally wish all passengers would cover up.
Meanwhile, Culpo’s boyfriend was apparently cold without his sweater and drew a complaint from another passenger (or busybody on Twitter) when he failed to wear a mask properly:

Finally, it merits mentioning this whole thing could be a publicity stunt that Culpo is using in an attempt to stay relevant. Obviously, if so mission accomplished…
CONCLUSION
Once again, it appears we have another incident of selective enforcement on American Airlines concerning the dress and appearance of a female passenger. I continue to be of the opinion that absent the exposure of reproductive organs or vulgar messaging, passengers should be allowed to wear what they please, even if most deem it skimpy or inappropriate.

Especially bimbo’s like these. Decency has gone out of style, anything goes as some crave attention so much they push the limits of proper decorum. At least they provide some entertainment much like the sideshow at circuses had years ago. Still they set a bad example for young ones.

I’m surprised nobody else addressed the, ahem, elephant in the room (no pun intended) that the reason why the gate desk didn’t confront the other woman was, er, that can be problematic? That despite all we hear that certain groups are “profiled”, it’s actually the opposite away around. A colleague of mine even said he often pulled out the “race card” to try to get out of traffic tickets. (I, despite not having much natural charm, can be charming in that I empathize with people and express it quite well and this often gets me a surprising number of perks that I wouldn’t otherwise deserve.)
Anyhoo, regarding Miss Universe’s attire: She’s lovely and I wouldn’t mind setting next to her on the beach or a seat but perhaps that’s the problem: Being quite lovely, what if she’s next to a gentleman and he’s worried he might be seen as harassing her with his gaze? It creates a social faux pas. I wish I could post URL’s because there’s a classic scene in Beavis and Butthead where Beavis complains he’s being “sexually harassed” by pretty girls. They dress pretty to be provocative and then can complain if they THINK a man is provoked.
All that said, my wife, I and child always dress up to fly and even so, when my wife was upgraded to 1st class she was snubbed by others in the class as she clearly didn’t “fit in” which I found amusing. I guess she has the stench of low class hence why she’s married to me.
When it comes to these more muddy dress code issues, I think Ben from OMAAT said it best: “ Some people will say “well people should dress up to fly, and I would never dress that way when flying.” While I’m not a woman, I probably wouldn’t dress that way either. But I also don’t dictate how other people should dress, and for that matter having to “dress up” is in no way reflected in American’s dress code.”
Even if you think this isn’t an “appropriate” way to dress when you fly, none of AA’s rules say it’s not allowed, and personally I really don’t pay attention to how people dress when I fly. I couldn’t care less, and I think often people use it as an excuse to pass judgement on strangers.
