One of the Best Dinners I’ve Ever Had on United Airlines

Matthew Klint Posted onJanuary 23, 2015December 5, 2016 5 Comments

As a 1K MillionMiler flyer on United, I’ve had my fair share of meals on UA over the last decade. Some have been good, some have been bad, but most were simply acceptable.

Last week I flew on United Airlines from Washington Dulles to Bahrain via Kuwait City on my way to the Qatar A350 inagural and was pleasantly surprised to see a choice on the menu I have not seen since my first p.s. flight from JFK-LAX in 2005: rack of lamb.

Noting that rack of lamb is my favorite dish, the choice was a no-brainer. But would it be good?

Turns out it was. It was delicious – even cooked medium rare, just the way I like it.

This dish is a winner! I hope it sticks around on the menu. I’ve only seen it on Middle East routes, but this would be far preferred over the other choices to Europe and Asia.

Perhaps it will not just be North American meal service that will be improving.

Had a similar rack of lamb a few years ago on UA in business and had the same reaction. Recalled the grand old days of F — yes, even domestic F — when roasts and racks were carved on a trolly and plated to order. Have never had as good a meal since in C or F on UA. Have several transPac C segments over the coming days so can only hope one of those half-dozen meals comes close to the one described.

BTW consider yourself fortunate on the evening you chose to fly to BAH. I was at IAD on Wednesday night waiting for my flight to YYZ when over the PA came an announcement that this flight’s gate had moved from C3 down to the other end of the pier at D40-something. Having myself walked the length of that horrid terminal pier on many occasions, and also take that same flight a few times, I commiserated with the walk those 200+ souls would be taking. A few minutes later this horde made its way past me at C26 en route to the D gates. But shortly thereafter, another announcement was made stating that the flight was now departing from its original C3 gate. And the reverse flow passed by my viewing location. But then yet another announcement that the gate was changed once more to the D40-something gate! Very glad I was not on that flight, that evening!

WOW. Matthew. That’s an amazing rack. I can’t believe that came from the current incarnation of UA.
    Good on them!

There used to be lamb not too long ago on p.s., but it was the Charlie Trotter special, and the sauce was terrible.

I did the IAD-KWI-BAH RT in Y two weeks ago. Had to say that the catering experience on both legs were WAY beyond my past experience with UA. (even a winner over their ex-HKG and ex-SIN routes) Also considering how empty the Y cabin was, I won’t refuse to fly this route again next time…
