It wasn’t that long ago that SAS offered a genuine business class on flights within Europe. Middle seats were blocked and delicious hot meals on real dishes were served. For this week’s Meal of the Week I fondly recall a trip to Iceland on SAS during the summer of 2012.
Flight One: Oslo to Reykjavik
I had the business class cabin to myself on this flight. While “business class” on most European airlines within Europe is simply economy class with a blocked middle, at least SAS had extra legroom and non slim-line seats.
Moments after takeoff pretzels with choice of beverage were served.
The meal must have been warming during taxi and takeoff because it was served directly afer the snack. No choice, but a wonderful steak served with boiled potatoes and ratatouille. Though July, it had been a cold, gray, damp morning and the warm meal hit the spot. The purser also offered me two piping hot bread rolls, which I accepted and devoured.
Although the steak came out medium well, it was very tasty and tender.
Also on the plate was a yogurt sauce for the meat (unnecessary) with chorizo and a bowl with cheese. There would be no sweet dessert served, but a small chocolate bar was included on the tray.
Let me use this intermission between flights to mention how much I enjoyed Icleand. It is a beautiful country and I cannot wait to return. Here are four pictures:
Flight Two: Reykjavik to Stockholm
After a very costly mishap on the way to the airport, I settled into my flight to Stockholm. There were two other passengers in business class today.
More pretzels and sparkling water after takeoff.
Today’s main course was reindeer. Served in a thick gravy with potato rösti, mushrooms, and vegetables, it was again a hit. Even the shrimp on the side (something I usually avoid) was tasty.
Cheese and chocolate again…a sweeter treat would have been nice…but a great meal.

Still a decent meal, but eating out of a box with plastic utensils is just not the same.
Love your site. Keep up the good work. As an FYI, those are not raw shrimp. They appear to be steamed or boiled, de-shelled and chilled, but not raw.
