A Concert on the Tarmac

Spirit Airlines and Mastercard present Brett Young’s Live From the Runway virtual concert celebrating an all-new Free Spirit loyalty program, Spirit Airlines is throwing a concert in Fort Lauderdale… from an airplane on the tarmac.

The show will start inside the aircraft before moving outside for a public reveal of the livery along with a light show outside.

“We know a lot of our Guests miss going to concerts.” Spirit Airlines Senior Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer Bobby Schroeter said. “Inviting Brett Young to play at the airport is our way of bringing them that experience.”

It’s a bold idea but reflects the company’s move to a different concept. This is a long way from the nickel and dime approach of the airline’s past and demonstrates its “invest in the guest” mantra. This also reflects the carrier’s new Free Spirit/Mastercard relationship covered in another post here.

Guests, Attendees

Virtual show attendees earn 100 Free Spirit points as a parting gift when watching the free concert on a special Youtube channel at 8 pm Eastern. Attendees can see the show here. In case you didn’t already know the artist, Brett Young’s performance is a combination of west coast meets southern sound country music.

There’s also a charitable benefit. The airline is donating 100,000 points to myLIFEspeaks, which is focused on “family empowerment, education, public health, and special needs advocacy in Haiti.”

The airline also hinted at a special giveaway trip to a lucky viewer.

Conclusion

This Spirit Airlines concert ticks all the boxes: it gives the people something in short supply this year (concerts), it’s unique, there’s a charitable component, and every viewer benefits with free miles and a chance for something more. This also reflects a new approach from Spirit that matches their revamped Free Spirit loyalty program. Frankly, this feels like an event that United might put on, and I love the creativity and customer-facing aspect of the concert. Well done, Spirit.

What do you think? Will you be attending the show?
