Spirit Airlines has announced new promotion this morning in conjunction with a new film.

“Spirit Untamed” Tie-In

Spirit Airlines has announced a partnership with a new Dreamworks movie, Spirit Untamed. The film is the next chapter from a prior Dreamworks film, “Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron.” The film follows a girl on the frontier who meets a very fast but untamed horse for who she is a kindred spirit. Spirit untamed premieres in theaters June 4th, 2021.

Like United Airlines did with the Star Wars franchise (so did ANA), Spirit has painted one of their A320 series aircraft to match the film. The livery will be unmistakable to frequent flyers of Spirit Airlines with its distinctive red-painted fuselage.

The tie-in is a good match for the carrier. The town in the film is “Miradero” and lends itself to a number of Latino themes, the carrier is one of the most prolific US carriers to Latin America. The protagonist is also one who thinks outside the box with an adventurous spirit. And, of course, the title fits the carrier as well.

Spirit is doing more than just painting a plane, however. Universal Studios is distributing the film and Spirit has leaned into that. The carrier flies to 43 destinations from Orlando (over half the network has direct flights to the city) several of those outside the United States. In conjunction with the film tie-in, Spirit is also giving away the following vacation package:

  • Roundtrip flights for four people to Orlando (provided by Spirit)
  • Accommodations at Universal’s Cabana Bay Beach Resort
  • Admission to Universal Studios Florida and Islands of Adventure theme parks, plus Universal’s Volcano Bay water theme park
  • 1,000 Free Spirit points on each flight operated on the painted aircraft to whoever happens to be sitting in “Lucky’s horseshoe seat” and a complimentary digital rental copy of the film

Giving away a free 1,000 Free Spirit points is a clever way to make every flight on the livery rewarding and it keeps it interesting for both frequent Spirit travelers as well as staff. If you’ve flown Spirit, you’ll be familiar with the occasional Free Spirit points giveaways – I have won a few as they are almost always quiz questions about the carrier and its “fit fleet” of exclusively Airbus A320 family planes. Logging into your Free Spirit account and entering the promo code will apply the points to your account.

The previous promotion within the entertainment industry was for country music singer, Brett Young, in which he hosted a virtual concert from an aircraft on the tarmac.

Conclusion

Spirit Airlines promotion is a smart way to incorporate their family-friendly approach, spontaneously reward customers, and reach a wide audience of their client base. While I would gladly trade the 1,000 miles for a coupon code for its fare club, I save enough on travel deals with the airline to be able to afford it. I can pool points in the new Free Spirit program so there’s value there too. This is the second such promotion in the entertainment industry for the carrier and I like that Spirit is showing this alternate side to the airline.

What do you think? Do you like this promotion? Do you plan on seeing the film?

Since most of their passengers are untamed animals, this is a great fit!
