The Simple Pleasure Of A Coffee-Warmed Stroopwafel On An Airplane

Matthew Klint Posted onFebruary 12, 2022November 14, 2023 14 Comments

One of the simple joys of life is a hot cup of coffee with a warmed stroopwafel, something I recently enjoyed on a short afternoon United Airlines flight.

My wife and I have a “coffee break” with my son every day after he returns home from school. It’s a ritual that I quite enjoy, with Augustine enjoying a “cappuccino” with mostly frothed milk and a few drops of espresso. It gives us time to chat and sometimes a chance to reflect.

But wherever I am in the world, I enjoy a cup of coffee in the afternoon and occasionally a sweet treat to go with it. Last week, I found myself on a United Airlines flight from Montreal to Washington Dulles during that time of day.

It was cold and snowy outside and frankly a little chilly onboard too. I was bundled up, but still ready for a nice cup of coffee. We hit some turbulence after takeoff, but eventually the flight attendant served beverages and offered a stroopwafel with it. A stroopwafel is a thin, round waffle cookie made from two layers of sweet baked dough held together by caramel filling…always delicious.

I opened my cookie and placed it on top of the hot cup of coffee to warm it up. That’s key–the stroopwafel becomes even tastier when the caramel filling is warmed.

And then I ate it. It was delicious. And I was thankful.

Our lives get so hectic and there is so much going on…sometimes it is nice just to enjoy a cookie and cup of coffee while looking at the window of an airplane.

Love it!!! That is always the treat I bring to my kids when I fly through Amsterdam. And yes, you have to leave it on top of the mug to melt the caramel.

And it suggests just that right on the package… Which I can understand you missed as you ripped it open in anticipation! 🙂

You can imagine my joy when my company put a box of those stroopwafels in our breakroom. I will confess to swiping a few and sticking them in my desk to enjoy with my morning coffee…

I agree. I like them. In 2023, I may start to fly United more because of the stroopwafel. By then, I may be cattle level elite due to the pandemic at which time, I will be a free agent to fly on any airline. I have not been cattle for so many years.

I have one of these with a cappuccino after every dinner I make at home. Heated in a toaster oven to make it really warm and gooey. Delicious!

I enjoyed the simplicity of this post, the subject matter and how you laid it out. A refreshing change from all the flashy clickbait I get on my feeds. And I’ll try one of those stroopwafels.

You think that’s good… Imagine being out shopping downtown in the middle of winter and getting one fresh and piping hot from a street vendor… No comparison.
