SWISS Will Offer Cheese Fondue, Other Gourmet Treats In Economy Class

SWISS has switched to a buy-on-board concept for short and mid-haul economy class flights out of Geneva (with the exception of Zurich). And while the loss of free sandwiches is to be mourned, the a la carte menu is impressive.

I don’t know about you, but I love Swiss cheese fondue. I know it is not the healthiest dish, but it is certainly a tasty one. In the past, fondue has been an occasional option in premium cabins on SWISS. Now, for the first time, economy class passengers can also enjoy fondue on flights out of Geneva.

Created according to the traditional recipe (50% Vacherin Fribourg and 50% Gruyère cheese), our fondue is served with bread and can be accompanied by a traditional charcuterie board with dried meats, cured ham and Gruyère salami.

That makes me hungry just writing that…

The new new menu also includes fresh sandwiches and salads, a leek quiche, Swiss hot chocolate, freshly-baked pain au lait, and bircher muesli (among several other items). You can find the full menu here.

CONCLUSION

Economy class passengers traveling in higher fare classes still receive a light snack out of Geneva. So do business class passengers. But this new service is a test case that I predict will expand to Zurich as well.

What do you think about the new SWISS buy-on-board menu?

It comes down to presentation – if served as above with hot cheese, it would be amazing. However, I expect a lukewarm plastic cup for the cheese and plastic wrapped bread that just won’t look appetizing.

How are they going to keep the cheese hot? It ain’t fondue if the cheese is cold.

While that looks delicious, to echo the other comments, how will they be able to get the cheese hot enough to be a true fondue? Because let’s face it, fondue leaves much to be desired when the cheese turns to glue…

CHF 17 for 200g of fondue is not exciting.

In business on the GVA routes you get to choose from the menu on a complimentary basis. I have such a route coming up so fondue is on the list. Swiss are never an exciting airline but they do what they do well and somehow I can’t imagine they would not heat the cheese, there would be outcry among the native population where this is a national treasure.

    Will report back.
