My Meal of the Week feature examines an airline meal from my travels over the years. This may be a meal from earlier in the week or it may be a meal served over a decade ago.
I recently flew SWISS from Zurich to Copenhagen on an early morning flight and was very pleased with the light but satisfying breakfast served onboard in business class.
SWISS Business Class Breakfast Always Hits The Spot
Even though the seat is the same as economy class, I greatly prefer business class on intra-europe flights because of the blocked middle seat and because you can generally look forward to a decent meal served onboard.
Shortly after takeoff, flight attendants sprang to action, offering a breakfast tray with choice of hot bread and beverage. There was no choice for the breakfast itself, but the tray included a number of nibbles including:
- bircher muesli topped in berries
- Cheese (gouda and brie)
- Meat (ham and bresaola)
- Hardboiled egg sprinkled with chives
Throw in a hot croissant (bread rolls were also available for those who wanted to make sandwiches with the meat and cheese) as well as a glass of orange juice and a strong cup of coffee and you really have a nice breakfast to help pass time on the flight.
The good news is that if you are purchasing a long-haul business class ticket (whether revenue or mileage), the connecting flight(s) within Europe also book into business class, so it’s not like you have to pay a huge premium for these seats.
CONCLUSION
I enjoyed a nice breakfast in SWISS business class on an early morning flight to Copenhagen. Although the menu was simple, it was simply delicious, with high-quality ingredients that really hit the spot.
Do you enjoy breakfast on SWISS?
I have yet to find better bircher muesli than the one in Swiss business class, even on the ground.
My recent experiences of this breakfast have been that the hard boiled egg has been reduced to a quarter without the chives!
You could also make a cheese & ham sandwich with the croissant. They’re delicious!
Flew Swiss a couple of weeks ago between Asia and EU, and I agree Swiss is doing a great job with its breakfast catering. My partner commented this is one area UA should be given a lesson by Swiss how consistent Swiss is able to provide the same high quality offerings across the network.
Be careful regarding seats. In case of smaller planes with two seats per side, some airlines don’t block it. So you get real economy experience except meal.
I know SAS does not block it, but I’ve never heard of KLM/Air France/Lufthansa/SWISS/Austrian doing something like that. Which airline did you encounter this on?
SAS also sells it as O, not J like the rest of the European airlines do
Air France-KLM don’t block a seat on their Embraers though the LH Group do. Not sure what AIr France is doing on the A220 as it’s relatively new to them. Swiss certainly block seats on the A220.
This is barely economy class breakfast… do you have a conflict of interest?
We can’t all fly Turkish.
took a quick trip (90 minutes) between Palma and Zurich and Swiss offered a very nice, healthy, light cold meal. Equally pleasant was LH 45-minute flight between Brussels and Frankfurt and a delicious snack was graciously provided by a lovely purser. Areat as compared to any US carriers’ unwillingness to cater shorter hops.
