An Austrian Lunch In The KwaZulu-Natal Midlands Of South Africa

South Africa really is a beautiful country. After morning meetings in Pietermaritzburg, we drove out into the country and enjoyed lunch at a quaint Austrian pub called The Bierfassl. It felt like I had stepped into the Germanic world.

Even during winter, it was beautiful, though I am told that during summer the midlands are simply gorgeous.

Indoor, outdoor, and patio seating was offered at The Bierfassl. The outdoor picnic benches felt like a beer garden.

We sat on the covered patio, but the indoor portion of the restaurant especially reminded me of a restaurant in Germany or Austria.

Most at the table ordered the specialty of the house, crispy Eisbein (pork knuckle or roasted ham hock) served with French Fries, sauerkraut, applesauce, and mustard.

I had a feeling at least one person would not be able to finish their plate, so I ordered spare ribs and then helped finish my colleague’s plate…twice as nice.

On each table sat a marker, half painted in green, half painted in red. When you needed something, you turned the green side up and a waitress would appear. When you wanted to be left alone, you placed the red side up.

We didn’t try the beer…I’ve never been a fan of the taste of beer and the food alone was bad enough for my diet. There was no need to add more calories on top.

CONCLUSION

South Africa is a treasure…I’ve certainly seen the beauty of Cape Town and the chic boroughs of Johannesburg and the majesty of Kruger National Park on past trips, but this was the first trip I’ve been in this region and I look forward to returning.

      Gluttony is only a minor sin.

        Do not be with heavy drinkers of wine,
        Or with gluttonous eaters of meat;
        For the heavy drinker and the glutton will come to poverty,
        And drowsiness will clothe one with rags.

    We’ve visited this particular restaurant on two occasions and each times we’ve blown away by the portions they serve!! On our second visit, we were wiser and ordered one meal, to share!
    The midlands are always a pleasant part of KZN to visit. So glad you enjoyed the visit!

    Klint clearly gets paid to write complimentary fluff like this. This restaurant is mediocre at best – the quality of the food is not what it used to be nor is the service. Very disappointed.

      No, I can assure you I am not paid for stuff like this and that I found the food very good.
