Trump Administration Takes Aim At “Junk Food” Airline Snacks

The latest aviation concern from the Trump administration? Onboard snacks.

U.S. Transportation Secretary Wants Healthier Snacks On Airplanes

U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy has a new priority for the flying public and it is not runway construction. It is snacks.

In a BlazeTV interview, Duffy argued that airlines should stop handing out butter and sugar-filled cookies and pretzels and instead offer something healthier. He believes this simple change could make air travel better for everyone.

“I would love some better snacks. I would love a little healthier snack on the airplane. Maybe that could change it all. If I didn’t get the really fattening cookie full of butter and sugar and crap or that little snack pack of pretzels. Can we do something else?”

You can watch the entire interview here:

Most major U.S. airlines presently offer sugary or sweet snacks, like Biscoff cookies, pretzels, Stroopwafels, Cheez-Its, Sun Chips, or granola bars. Some carriers sell healthier options in buy-on-board menus, but the free snacks are virtually always processed items with long shelf lives…and passenger pleasers.

Duffy framed his suggestion as part of a broader effort to improve civility in the skies. He wants Americans to dress up and behave better when they fly and sees healthier food as part of that push.

“I want to have a conversation with America that says, ‘Listen, let’s call on our better angels.’ Let’s dress more respectfully. Let’s be nicer to one another.”

This follows earlier comments that overly casual attire might contribute to unruly behavior onboard. Whether that link exists is certainly debatable, but I’m 100% onboard with treating others the way you want to be treated.

Personally, I’d love to see healthier snacks onboard flights…like mixed nuts cooked in a good oil or dried fruit with no sugar added. I think we must all work harder toward preventative health and that the obesity issue in the USA is perhaps the most critical existential crisis, though I’d concur that Cheetos of all shapes and sizes are worrisome right now.

It’s interesting that this comes from Duffy, though he stopped short of proposing any federal regulations or guidelines concerning junk food on airplanes.

CONCLUSION

Snack carts are not the root of bad behavior in the air. Still, there is nothing wrong with expanding healthier choices beyond cookies and crackers. Airlines could easily add nuts, fruit, or yogurt without reinventing their service…it’s a great idea that I’ve also expressed before. In the end, as much as cookies and pretzels are comfort food, I’d skip them altogether…your body will thank you later. Eating McDonald’s in bed each night is also not recommended!

There is just one problem with his wish. The majority of the US population do not want/like healthier snacks. Good luck offering healthy pistachios, oat based granola bars, low sugar candies, probiotic sodas, kombucha, etc… on a plane. Most of passengers will complain that they want their Doritos, potato chips, Skittles, sodas, etc… Unfortunately, the US created a monster by feeding its population with crap since the 1950s and that will take generations to change and unfortunately many people will die because of their diets. Also, with GLP1 drugs getting cheaper, I know lots of people that prefer to take pill rather than eating healthier. It is what t is.

You should educate yourself on the food we buy here in America. I worked my entire life with food companies and I can assure you most if the food you buy on supermarkets here is horrible when compared to Europe and other countries in the world. Just check how many grams of added sugar are on the bread you eat everyday? Bread anywhere else has no sugar. They add here so the bread has a longer shelf life and people eat more. Check the quality of the weather on the pasta sold here. Have you heard of any obesity or celiac disease in Italy? Read about high fructose corn syrup and what it does for your body. So instead of targeting the Government at least acknowledge there is a good intention on pushing for better food quality in America.

Yes, of course. We have celiac disease in Italy. Our government and our service industries are very aware and sensitive to catering to people who have it. In my local grocery, we have an entire aisle for gluten-free foods.

Every member of the great American Volksgemeinschaft is like a single cell of a larger national body. It’s vital for your wise and noble führers in DC to take a firm hand in matters of public health and communal wellbeing. RFK knows what is best for you, and you knew he was part of the deal when you chose Trump at the ballot box.

When Duffy begins to act less like Martha Stewart and more like a transportation secretary, I might pay attention. The reason sugary and otherwise unhealthy snacks are offered is cost and shelf life. Heck water ( healthy ) is often not obtainable without a significant charge.

Most American food products are banned in Europe because of carcinogenic ingredients. This week Chobani was found to be contaminated with liquid plastics called Phthalates.

Who is that delusional that Junk food Apple or Button-Down Joggers will make a difference to TSA lines, Overbooking, delays, crazy Karen, people who think playing games/watching video can be done using the speaker, …..
6 tiny pretzels or 2 small cookies make a difference somehow? Look at the people coming up with these ideas … guess how many are only flying private.

What percentage of an average American’s diet is consumed on airplanes? Extremely little. Worrying about the healthiness of school lunches (not his area, of course) can have a significant impact on kids. Worrying about the healthiness of snacks that will be consumed on average less than once per person per year makes no sense. It is sillier than worrying about the caloric content of that cherry on your sundae. Big picture, mate!

Guess what would have been the biggest improvement to the airline passenger experience? Having the passenger bill of rights that this administration killed.
