United’s Team USA Olympic Videos

Matthew Klint Posted onFebruary 7, 2014December 9, 2016 6 Comments

U.S. companies are never hesitant to remind us of their support for Team USA in the biennial winter and summer Olympic games. Olympic logos tend to appear near the corporate logo and special ads are taken out as the games draw close. Airlines are in a unique position because they transport athletes and also have the ability to remind captive audiences locked inside a metal canister of this fact. To that end, United Airlines has produced three new promotional videos highlighting its role in the XXII Olympic Winter Games in Sochi, Russia.

As it turns out, the videos are very nicely done and I like them. I can understand that some might view the final video above as overly jingoistic, considering United serves 69 countries, not just the USA, but come on, it is a U.S. airline and I do not think there is any shame in rooting for athletes from your own country.

Great commercials, but BA’s “Don’t Fly, Support Team GB” ad is still my favorite. This one too.

The commercial is among the best United has made in quite some time. I like (most of) it a lot. Unfortunately, I’m already quite jaded at the empty promise of the “Friendly-” campaign, so that bit at the end ruined it for me.

The “GO-USA” piece gets a bit repetitive, but I don’t see any issue with an American airline showing support for its olympians, especially since it is a sponsor. National pride on airlines is a expected, especially surrounding sporting events.

Not to be too much of a downer, but I feel like the GO-USA mittens are a blatant ripoff of the Team Canada mittens from 2010, and frustratingly, like many retail products sold here, were mass produced in China.

Is this a commercial for television or will we be seeing these in place of Jeff before the safety video during the Olympics?

I believe we will see the first one on TV and the second and third one (at least the second one) before the safety videos.

Who is the woman at the end high-fiving everyone? At first I thought it was Peggy Fleming but it can’t be, right?

@Coach_Ed: I think the UA FA looks a little younger than 65!
