My Last Meal on Virgin America

Matthew Klint Posted onMay 2, 2018November 14, 2023 2 Comments

I’m going to miss the food on Virgin America in both first and economy class.

I touched on this in my review last week of my final Virgin America flight, but want to dedicate this week’s Meal of the Week post to my final meal on Virgin America.

The flight was from Los Angeles (LAX) to Dallas Love (DAL), with flight time of about three hours. Lunch was served onboard.

It began with a delicious, warm sourdough bread roll with olives and a salad with lettuce, olives, tomatoes, cucumbers, and feta cheese. It was light, fresh, and delicious.

The main course, however, was the A-M-A-Z-I-N-G part.  It was a beef filet covered in a mushroom/curry sauce (I know, generally not my sort of thing…) and topped with cilantro/coriander. On the side, sticky white rice and grilled, sliced bell peppers. It was tender, flavorful, and substantial.

Ordering beef on an airplane, especially on a domestic flight, is rarely a smart idea. But this dish was excellent.

I wish I could say the same about the dessert. The berries were nice, but the marshmallows…no thanks.

My Last “Economy” Class Meal

I would be remiss for not highlighting an amazing meal I had from the economy class menu on an earlier flight. This chicken gyro had tzatziki inside along with fresh onions and cucumber that made it the freshest and tastiest onboard sandwich I’ve ever had. You can see my sandwich is plated–I ordered this meal from first class, but it is otherwise identical to what economy class passengers could purchase.

CONCLUSION

The point of this post is that the food on Virgin America was delicious. I’ll miss it. As Virgin America has now folded into Alaska Airlines, let’s hope the onboard menus will not deeply regress.

One thing I appreciate about both Virgin America and Alaska is that meals are served on shorter flights in first class, almost like a European airline. I trust that will continue.

I flew Alaska yesterday round trip from DAL-SFO in first. They’re still serving Virgin style meals and the Virgin snack tray. They’re still using the cool airplane salt/pepper shakers too.
