Appreciation Of A Traveling Mother: My Wife

Kyle Stewart Posted onMay 11, 2025May 11, 2025 4 Comments

Throughout the year, the evidence of my wife’s dedication to our children is evident, especially when we travel.

Always Sharing Her Seat

When it comes to traveling as a family, especially with infants, it’s my wife that shares her seat. This isn’t my mandate, I’d welcome the kids sharing my seat, but she’s far more comforting and the clear choice. In the above image from a decade ago, our daughter Lucy was as sick as she had ever been. (Some day when she’s older, I am sure she will be very upset for sharing this image.)

It’s my wife that is condemned to watch bright garbage over feature films on long haul flights. It’s she that has to navigate with curious kids interrupting her meal, and while I have changed plenty of diapers onboard (I try to take the lead on this), she’s the first line of defense.

De Facto Organizer

My wife is the final check on our reservations, plans, documents. She’s the one that makes sure everything is in order, even if I was the one that booked it. Admittedly, on more than one occasion, I have left off our son as a lap infant. While it’s easily corrected, she’s the one that makes sure that everything is right before we get to the airport.

She carries the passports, the documents, checks to see if there’s a better car rental option (I just show up and expect to upgrade). She heads off disaster – potential disasters that I create – so that we have a seamless experience.

My wife is also the reason we don’t show up at the airport just 60 minutes prior to departure as would be my preference. She thinks about how the kids will react, she prepares snacks, makes sure their devices are charged and loaded with content. We would probably still get off the ground if left up to me, but it would be messy and painful.

The Biggest Advocate For Our Children

There’s no greater advocate for family travel than my wife. My daughter is now 11, and we have spent exactly four nights away from her on a trip. We agree on the importance of our children traveling with us, but she’s consistently ensuring they have a front row seat wherever we go.

It’s incredible how my wife seamlessly evolved into the glue that keeps our family traveling together and always puts our kids first. She’s an inspiration to me, and a wonderful example for our children.

Happy Mother’s Day to her, you, and yours.
