Cathay Pacific teased us on Facebook and Twitter last week with the image above, stating that it would announce new service to either Boston, Seattle, Miami, or Newark this week. Newark is the winner and the new flight is already loaded in the system, with plenty of award inventory. Service commences on March 2, 2014 with a three-cabin 77W aircraft, featuring economy, premium economy, and business class. No first class cabin.
- CX890 HKG 5:00p – 9:00p EWR
- CX899 EWR 1:50a – 5:40a+1HKG
United Airlines operates a 777-200 on this route with a BusinessFirst product and no Global First class, so it makes sense that Cathay chose not to offer first class on this flight.
Award space has also been loaded and it is quite generous in the early stage. If you are planning a trip for next summer, many flights have several award seats available in business class (and economy class of course). Most seem to have five in business and two in premium economy Let me know if I can help you with your award planning.
One-way pricing on Cathay Pacific is available most easily with four loyalty programs:
- 30,000/50,000 Alaska Mileage Plan Miles
- 35,000/55,000 AAdvantage Miles
- 35,000/70,000 British Airways Avios
- 55,000/80,000 Cathay Pacific Asia Miles [90,000/145,000 if booked r/t]
I’ve got a review of Cathay Pacific business class coming up from Vancouver to Hong Kong and I was very impressed–Cathay offers a solid product that left me refreshed and looking forward to my next flight.
Hopefully this new service to Newark will put pressure on United to further improve its own service to the “Pearl of the East”. Book your awards now–the space will not last.
I’m shocked they chose EWR over Seattle! I thought for sure it would be Seattle, with the large Chinese population in Seattle and an alternative to YVR, Seattle makes sense. Guess I’ll keep dreaming and hoping!
