Passenger Upset That Flight Attendant Tucked Him In…

When I hear airline passengers complain about good service, I really do think that no good deed goes unpunished. To the United Airlines flight attendant at the heart of this: please continue to place blankets over passengers. It represents excellent service that is greatly appreciated by the vast majority of your passengers.

Flight Attendant Caringly Tucks In Passenger, But Upsets Him Instead

A passenger took to Flyertalk to complain about an incident that happened on his United Airlines flight from Chicago to Paris:

So I’m lying down and asleep in a row of 3 economy seats a few hours in. Sleeping soundly until I feel something and awake to see a FA putting blanket on me. I groggily look at her, puzzled and unhappy.

“You looked chilly” she said. I shook my head ’no’. “You don’t want the blanket?” I shook my head “no” again. “Sorry,” she said and took the blanket and went away.

Don’t know what to think of this. It’s an attempt at great service that failed me as I was deeply asleep and couldn’t get back to sleep again for quite a bit…

It still feels inappropriate to me for a FA to do anything that could possibly wake a sleeping customer, unless the customer asked for that ahead of time.

The passenger was asleep and the flight attendant’s gesture woke him up. That’s not fun. But his indignation over the incident really disappoints me. What kinder gesture than for a flight attendant to notice you are asleep, look cold, and try to keep you warm?

I know some people like sleeping “cold” and that United’s economy class blankets can be like sandpaper. Still, this sort of gesture on the part of the flight attendant merits our praise, not our scorn.

I think about his reaction and how that must have made the flight attendant feel. Will she ever offer that gesture again even if 99/100 passengers appreciate it? A scowl and harsh reaction from a passenger make it less likely and that is truly a shame.

CONCLUSION

No one wants to be awakened from deep slumber, especially in economy class. But to even be annoyed at that gesture strikes me as a poor reaction to what was a lovely act of service.

How would you have reacted to a flight attendant tucking you in?

A psychologist would remind the offended party, one cannot change others, only his reaction. Part of being an adult is showing a diplomatic response even when experiencing inconvenience, desilusions or failed expectations. If turbulence had caused the airplane to move violently and disrupt his sleep, would he blame the airline?

One of the perks of flying first class on British Airways is that the BA flight attendants are all good sports. I have my photos of various BA F/As tucking me into bed. Maybe I can get one to read me a story.

How does one look cold when asleep in an economy seat? I agree, it was a kind gesture.

Blankets are to prevent the chance of their male specific anatomy becoming too obviously visible to others on the plane while asleep. It’s only natural that it may become much more visible and obvious during the stages of sleep. Some passengers may rather not see. How do people who fly often not know this?

Today’s world has regressed to the point when we turn a kind gesture into something offensive. Some people just want to complain about insignificant occurrences just because they like contention then post it on social media to gain approval

You know society has regressed when a kind gesture is viewed as offensive. So sad

In today’s world … “you can’t win”…”damned if you do, damned if you don’t!” His complaint is an example of everything wrong with the world today. Very sad. And as for the Flight Attendant, you are an example of kindness! Don’t every stop caring about others.

Open letter to this pax: Please leave United and take Spirit. Or take a boat. Better yet, just stay home where you won’t be offended by anyone or anything.
