ICE To Patrol Jetbridges And Check Documents On Domestic Flights At MSP

Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents are expected to increase their presence at Minneapolis-Saint Paul International Airport (MSP) over the next several weeks, conducting document checks in public areas and on jetbridges of domestic flights. The move marks a noticeable expansion of federal immigration enforcement into what most travelers consider a routine domestic travel environment.

Report: ICE Agents To Patrol MSP Airport And Check Travel Documents

According to airport employees and local reporting, ICE agents will spend roughly three weeks at Minneapolis-Saint Paul International Airport checking and verifying documents of both passengers and workers. The increased presence is expected to include patrols of jet bridges and other areas beyond the Transportation Security Administration’s (TSA) security checkpoints.

Neither the Metropolitan Airports Commission nor MSP Airport Police confirmed advance notice of the operation, saying only that federal regulations give federal agents broad access to airport property, including terminal spaces, airside areas, and parking facilities.

What We Know About The Document Checks

Based on the accounts shared by airport staff and leaked internal communications, ICE’s presence at MSP will randomly stop individuals and request documentation showing lawful status in the United States.

Law enforcement actions inside airports are not without precedent, especially at international checkpoints where Customs and Border Protection (CBP) routinely processes arriving travelers. But the reported scope of this initiative, which includes checks on domestic travel routes and jetbridges while boarding and de-boarding, represents an escalation of federal immigration enforcement into spaces we’ve previously not seen them, at least on any sort of regular basis.

Travelers should be aware that while U.S. citizens are not legally required to show identification to ICE agents, federal law requires lawful permanent residents (“Green Card” holders) to carry their documentation at all times. Presenting proper identification when asked generally helps avoid unwanted delays…

This additional federal presence will not replace TSA credential checks, which remain the standard for domestic flights.

A Controversial Escalation

Every expansion of immigration enforcement authority into civilian or public spaces generates debate, particularly when it involves airports and travel, a protected right itself. Critics argue that these operations represent a heavy-handed approach that can blur the line between legitimate law enforcement and safeguarding civil liberties, including the unfettered right of domestic travel and the Fourth Amendment’s protection against unreasonable searches. Others also point out that ICE agents have broad authority under federal regulations to operate in and around transportation hubs.

Even though U.S. citizens do not need to carry a passport or REAL ID for domestic flights, others, including lawful residents and certain foreign visitors, are required to maintain valid immigration documentation. Miscommunication or misunderstanding in these situations can lead to unnecessary detentions or missed flights, even when there is no violation. And even U.S. citizens can face scrutiny from federal officers.

Regular readers might remember when I ran into U.S. border agents demanding to check IDs on the jetbridge…in El Salvador. The agents were intimidating and aloof, clearly emboldened by the power that they asserted.

CONCLUSION

ICE’s expanded presence at MSP Airport, including document checks and patrols of jetbridges, highlights a significant shift in how immigration enforcement intersects with domestic air travel. While federal law gives agencies broad access to airport property, the scale and visibility of these operations rerpesent a serious escalation in federal surveillance of domestic travel.

Whether this strategy achieves its goals without disrupting the travel experience remains to be seen. What is clear is that the blending of immigration enforcement and routine domestic travel checkpoints raises questions about the balance between immgiration policy and civil liberties and is the sort of the heavy-handed tactic more typically seen under authoritarian regimes.

I guess this means another check in addition to TSA? Makes you wonder if their passport/ID check is sufficient to begin with. Maybe we need to fix that first.
But it’s not those illegals I am worrying about if I travel through MSP—it will be the fat lesbian Karens double-dosing on SSRIs that might make a scene and cause delays/cancellations.

TSA is not verifying your citizenship or status. One can pass through TSA on a passport of (most?) any country (and other documents for Canadians, Mexicans, etc.). They do not, to my knowledge, check immigration status when you do that. I am not offering support for ICE activities in MSP. I just observe that people who pass through TSA on legit documents may be here without legal status.

Sounds like you would enjoy this particular police state, likely, because you have no accent, or are a certain complexion. And, if not, don’t worry, you’re ‘one of the good ones’ and the ‘leopards won’t eat YOUR face.’ Just ‘comply’ and ‘obey’ and show ‘respect’ and you’ll be fine. I recall your homeport is CMH, so, tell us, are ‘they’ still ‘eating the cats, eating the dogs, eating the pets of the people who live there,’ or was that all b.s.?

Walz brought this upon himself with his inability to understand ICE is doing its job picking up criminals he refuses to turn over.

This shouldn’t be that hard, turn over illegal criminals in your city and ICE doesn’t have to go looking for them. Or ICE shoots them when they come at agents with snow shovels.

Or trade Minnesota to Denmark for Greenland and problem solved as well. The Vikings and Twins suck anyways.

No Kyle, this isn’t about the governor; this is about the President and the midterms. In the past, the GOP has manufactured crises like the migrant caravan, in the 2018 midterms; perhaps, Minneapolis will be that attempt this time around, maybe to go so far as to falsely claim ‘insurrection’ or ‘riot’ as a pretext to cancel elections (which is not factual or legal, at this time).

If this country can survive another couple years of Trump I expect by then Trump will have destroyed what’s left of the conservative party (Trump has already made it the Republican Party by name only). Even in red states, the majority of voters did not sign up for this clown show masquerading as a authoritative regime. Their disastrous fascist attempts at running this country will lead to the democrats and progressives controlling all branches of our government (the Supreme Court will be expanded to neuter the Trump appointees), and arresting the true insurrectionists.

derek, you tried to suggest this to Ben over at OMAAT, recently, and you’re wrong. People do not literally have to be a US citizen to exist freely within the United States. Our Constitution protects all people, not just citizens, within the country. ICE has been violating that Constitution, and there will be accountability, eventually.

That said, if you have a foreign passport, you can exist and visit here, legally, as many foreign citizens do. So, sadly, you regrettably are misstating the law; I suspect your intent is to spread fear and confusion. Remember Covid restrictions? You guys are in a dark dark place. ICE Officers are too weak to say no to Trump. Pitiful how many Americans choose to earn a living. Anyone who gets in the secure part of the airport has (hopefully) passed through TSA. They would not have passed through an sort of immigration (or emigration) control. As best I can tell, so long as you have the right ID and are not on a list, you get into the secure area after Xray/body scan. Real ID does guarantee current legal status. I believe (correct me if I’m wrong, please) that when one uses their non-US passport for ID, there is not a check of legal status. So, unless ICE has flagged that person (don’t think it is automatic), they get through. I would assume there are always people in the secure area who don’t have legal status. Heck, look at the Texas teenager ICE took in Bkston. She had not have status for many years, but must have flown without incident to get to BOS and on her visits selecting a unjversity.

I was on a train, taking a day trip out of Perpignan to Narbonne. My train was a TGV that started in Barcelona and had it’s first French stop in Perpignan. French “ICE” entered to carriage and requested ID. I always leave my passport at the hotel, so I only had my US driver’s license. The agent scolded me, reminded me I was required to carry “proper” identification, and let it slide (I assume that’s what he said from context). I do not note this as a support of the MSP actions. I do note nobody in the carriage thought anything about this checking. I assume they did this as the train started in Barcelona. I assume my blond hair, blue eyes, pasty complexion, and age (60 at the time?) helped me. I have my passport on me, obviously, when I using the train to a new hotel. I still refuse to carry it on day trips. I do now carry my passport card. It isn’t valid for entry into France, and their “ICE” probably have no idea what it is. But, I figure it’s better than a d/l, and I’m not ridking passport loss or damage. They’ll let me go eventually. Hopefully, they’d be linked to the EES, have my photo and could check my finger prints.

A question, if anybody knows. Does ICE have access to the passport database in a manner similar the CBP? CBP can use facial rec. to confirm a US passport. Indeed, last March at DFW, the facial rec. found me, and I wasn’t required to show (swipe/use NFC) my passport. If ICE does, it sure might (unless they are being aholes) make interactions shorter if they ever bring you in.
