I’ve Found a Star Alliance Lounge (Spanair) Worse than United’s!

Matthew Klint Posted onJanuary 7, 2010 5 Comments

While waiting for my Lufthansa flight from Madrid to Frankfurt this morning, I had a chance to sample the Spanair Lounge. I will post pictures in my upcoming trip report, but I was shocked at the total lack of food in what was an otherwise nice lounge.

The seats were comfortable, there were computer stations, and the beer and wine were free. Yet the only food offerings were potato chips, olives, peanuts, crackers, and cookies. Because food/snacks are an integral part of the lounge experience for me, I give the Spanair lounge low marks overall–approaching US Airways levels.

I shouldn’t rag on UA’s Red Carpet Clubs so much. Actually, I commend UA for improving many lounges both in terms of interior design and food selection in 2009. ORD, LAX, SFO, and PHL (to name a few) all saw noteable improvements.

The lounge is a key part of the travel experience and if anyone from Spainair sees this blog, please take this constructive critcism to heart: cocktail snacks don’t cut it.

Wow – “potato chips, olives, peanuts, crackers, AND cookies”? I would kill for that at any Admirals Club. I’m lucky if there are day old cookies at most Admirals Club locations. 😉

LH had a contracted lounge in MAD in the past, it was also crappy food, good drink, and very old seats.. LH just went to using the Spanair lounge. Spanair has 3 lounges in their system, not much at all. When the Spanair lounge opened in MAD is was much better.. each time back I see more cuts..

Sounds pretty similar to the SFO CO PC…free beer and wine, complete lack of food other than chips when I went in, complete lack of view.

@Mike: Time to switch to UA!

@Damian: LH still uses the contract lounge. I checked that out too. It is as you describe.

@Rob: I’ve been meaning to check out the CO PCs at LAX, SFO, and DEN and have never had the time during my layovers the last couple months. Sounds like I am in for a disappointment.

The PC Club in Denver is almost impossible to visit if your flying United. You have to get a train and switch concourses. It’s honestly not worth the trouble.
