Kacey Musgraves Calls Out “Shockingly Hostile” Purser On American Airlines

Even celebrities sometimes encounter bad service onboard. 33-year-old country singer Kacey Musgraves now has a problem with American Airlines. Specifically, she has a problem with the “male” purser on her recent flight from Spain, who she accused of acting in an “appalling and shockingly hostile” manner toward her and other passengers.

Kacey Musgraves Upset After Bad Flight On American Airlines

Posting the complaint on Twitter, where she has close to one million followers, Musgraves said:

Just ended my travels to/from my show in Spain on the most intense and honestly f*cking awful flight on @americanair.

It’s extremely rare for me to want to come to a social media platform to complain about something like this. I know there are way bigger things going on in the world at the moment. But I truthfully just don’t want anyone else to have my experience.

I wish it were as simple as complaining about the broken seat that wouldn’t’ recline for 7 hours overnight or there being no wifi.

But was the appalling and shockingly hostile behavior of a certain male employee (the flight’s chief purser) that I will be filing a massive compliant against along with many other passengers that were subject to his extremely overblown, necessary aggression and erratic behavior. he made me feel unsafe and upset to the point of crying and I witnessed another passenger he also made cry. The female flight attendants on board vocalized their own disbelief, and struggles with him as well.

@americanair, I will be going through the proper chancels [sic] but I need to make it known that you have a liability on your hands with this man.

— K A C E Y (@KaceyMusgraves) June 5, 2022

An airline spokesperson said American Airlines has “reached out to Ms. Musgraves to learn more about her experience and address her concerns.”

Thankfully, I’ve never run into a hostile purser on American Airlines before, but I know many who have. There sadly seem to be a handful of bad apples that are disturbed by having to provide service to passengers. While Musgraves has chosen not to share more details, the specificity and tone of her note make me think she has a legitimate gripe.

Musgraves posted her tweet from Chicago, which may suggest she had flown AA41 from Barcelona (BCN) to Chicago (ORD) in early June. American Airlines does not fly between Madrid and Chicago (its Iberia partner does).

CONCLUSION

For AA’s sake, bad flight attendants who are hostile, aggressive, and erratic have no place in the skies. I hope the flight attendant in question is interviewed and if necessary, corrective action (up to and including termination) is taken. There is never an excuse to be nasty to a celebrity or to any passenger at all.

Why mention their gender? How is that important? How about their race? Body type? We don’t really know anyway. I’m raising my children to be aware of gender fluidity, not to assume gender, and not make generalizations based on gender.

Oh come on…… There is a difference between mentioning gender compared to race/body type/etc. RM*E……

She performed on Primavera, so she indeed was probably flying back on AA flight 41 from BCN.

Especially when Kacey doesn’t even know how the purser self-identifies. Would have been much more respectful to use non-binary gender pronouns like they/them.

Sounds like you’d be offended if I called you a woman or a man a man. What a bunch of whimpy saps we have in the World these days. I’m so blessed to own the company where I work at so I can fire woke weaklings or not hire them in the first place, they’re always complaining about something, never happy.

This is what is wrong with this world.M ,usgraves was merely identifying the person she encountered and obviously he appeared to be a man but nowflakes like you who must make everything political. You can’t call anyone anything anymore. You can’t be a man or a woman, you can’t be fat or thin. M

If I were a celebrity with money, I don’t think I’d fly AA or IB across the pond. That was her primary error. I’d certainly be willing to backtrack or connect elsewhere to travel on a better product. Of course, not all celebrities are air travel aficionados like we are 😉 And not all celebrities have the luxury of time.

Yes, you can search that she was in Barcelona early June. I assume she was in business class which surprises me a purser would not treat those high spending passengers well. Well, actually nothing surprises me on AA.

Nothing about this report is a surprise to me. American’s inflight service has deteriorated badly over the years. Chalk this up as another reason to not ever set foot on another American Airlines flight in future. Others should do the same. Maybe, just maybe, American will get the hint and get their act together.

You may not like Delta’s CEO but I have to tell you his company has the best operations from any other US airlines and I have been flying them for almost 20 years and haven’t found one FA that treated me badly. Can’t say the same for AA and UA.

I really hope the Purser in question is shown this article and makes a point of addressing the complaint with his Employer and Union ( if Pursers are unionised?). Three sides to every story and I’m hopeful we all learn about his behaviour.

Yes, the purser does enjoy union protection. He should at least have to explain his conduct.

Just flew back from Paris and the FA working flight (J) was awful. Slammed my tray table open and closed, threw table cloth down, couldn’t give 2-sh*ts that I pre-ordered a meal, said “we don’t have that (it was on the menu), what else do you want?” – not an ounce of empathy or care Couldn’t get her attention throughout the flight (9 hours). Wasn’t drinking any alcohol, just wanted water to stay hydrated. On my outbound flight to Paris, I wasn’t served my meal until 2+ hours. They literally neglected to bring my meal (seated in 6A). I’m CK, so AA is an equal opportunity provider of crappy service.

Rather than the usual celebrity rant, this actually seems calmly presented. Further, given how well we know the entitled and nasty demeanor of many AA senior flight attendants working International flights it sounds all too familiar. I don’t doubt for one minute what she said occurred. Like the time I was threatened by the Purser on AA for walking through the galley to the restroom on the other side (which was empty and it was the only way to access) with a warning that, ” I would be arrested when landing if I didn’t stop cutting through his galley.”

A Senior flight attendant in charge is called a Chief Purser in most every civilized country. Or as you prefer to call them, “Third world SH$T holes.”

I call them what they are, stewardesses or male flight attendants… No need for the PC antics, just call it the way it is.

      • Parker Otis Reply
        June 20, 2022 at 7:52 am

This isn’t a PC thing – it’s a specific job title/rank (usually the most senior cabin crew member) and is actually the more antiquated way to refer to that role (other airlines have started transitioning to “inflight leader”, “service manager” etc…). All you guys with tiny egos (and presumably other tiny things…) who always look for a culture war to fight…sheesh…

If the other passengers complain, as she says they will, then her story is corroborated and AA can take action against the person in question. If the other passengers don’t, then her story is not corroborated and what can anyone really conclude from her post? The vast majority of flight attendants want to do a good job and don’t want to be jerks. To say that any airline’s service has declined over time is NOT because the flight attendants want to be jerks — it’s because management has cut in-flight staffing so the per person workload increases to the point that they are at their tasking limit. I’m a CK and I talk with a lot of flight attendants about their work conditions.

    • Stuart Reply
      June 15, 2022 at 1:39 am

There would be many that would complain about their work conditions if all they had to do was open and close the door.

I doubt on a nearly 10 hour flight from MAD-ORD were the flight attendants in Business Class feeling any stress or pressures in doing their job, unless of course they are lazy and resent doing anything, which is likely the case.

      • pelican55 Reply
        June 15, 2022 at 11:20 am

As a Purser for a major US airline, there’s really no stress or pressure if the flight is short-staffed in B/C. Besides, it is rare that the cabin short-staffed will be B/C; it’s usually economy that takes the hit. BUT, if it happens to be a premium cabin, then you work at the same pace, and try to be as efficient as possible… no big deal… and if takes 10 min longer to collect the trays after the meal svc, so what? Small world problems.
There’s no need to feel stressed out, and work twice as fast to make up for the ‘missing’ f/a… even more so on a trans-Atlantic flight with plenty of time to perform all your inflight duties.
