Lufthansa Group has quietly made access to its First Class Lounges more generous, harmonizing guest rules across Lufthansa, SWISS, and Austrian Airlines. For families like mine, this is a welcome change, even if it probably won’t change how we actually book our trips.

Lufthansa Group Makes First Class Lounge Guest Access More Generous

I’ve spent a lot of time over the years in Lufthansa and SWISS First Class Lounges, and these remain among my favorite places in the airline world.

The Lufthansa First Class Terminal in Frankfurt is particularly special to me. I’ve been visiting it for more than 15 years and still consider it one of the finest ground experiences in commercial aviation. The food, the quiet atmosphere, the personalized service, the rubber ducks, and of course the Porsche or Mercedes ride directly to the aircraft all make it a place I deliberately build extra time into my itinerary to enjoy.

I also love Lufthansa’s First Class Lounge in Munich, particularly the Satellite location with its outdoor terrace, and the beautiful SWISS First Class Lounge in Zürich. In fact, I once needlessly but deliberately routed through Zürich simply to spend time in the SWISS First Lounge.

So I’m always interested when the access rules for these lounges change.

Two Guests Now Allowed In Lufthansa Group First Class Lounges

The Lufthansa Group has standardized its guest policy for First Class passengers and HON Circle members, allowing two guests plus their own children under 18 into eligible First Class Lounges.

Previously, the Lufthansa rule was structured differently: a First Class passenger or HON Circle member could bring one regular guest, plus a spouse or life partner and their own children under 18. SWISS, meanwhile, already had a more straightforward policy allowing two guests plus children.

The distinction may sound trivial, but the new rule is more generous because the second adult no longer has to be your spouse or partner. You can now bring two adult companions regardless of their relationship to you, plus your own children under 18.

LoyaltyLobby shared the update from Lufthansa:

Greater flexibility for lounge access: As a HON Circle Member or First Class passenger, you will soon be able to bring two travel companions, as well as your own children under the age of 18, into the First Class Terminal and First Class Lounges. As before, all travel companions and children require a valid boarding pass for the same flight as you.

This adjustment further harmonizes access rules across Lufthansa Group airlines and extends your options when traveling with family members and companions. The specific access policies applicable to the First Class Terminal or First Class Lounges at the respective location will apply.

Guests must still meet the applicable same-flight requirements, so this isn’t a way to invite random friends who happen to be passing through the airport.

A Nice Improvement For Families

For my family, the old rule actually worked quite well. If I were flying Lufthansa First Class with my wife and kids, my wife qualified as my spouse and the children were admitted as my own children under 18 (though the one time we did it together, we were all in first class).

Under the new rules, the relationship distinction disappears.

To be clear, we’re not likely to find ourselves in a situation in which I’m flying First Class while my wife and kids are sitting farther back in the airplane. If we’re traveling together, I’ll either put everyone in First Class or we’ll all fly in a lower cabin.

Unless it was my wife…

But I digress.

The more practical use case might be traveling with two friends, colleagues, or extended family members. Under the old Lufthansa policy, only one could qualify as your regular guest unless the second happened to be your spouse or partner. Now both can enter.

That’s objectively more generous.

And considering how restrictive airline lounge access has generally become, I’m glad to see Lufthansa Group move in the opposite direction here, even if you have to pay a pretty penny for it with no more partner awards.

CONCLUSION

The Lufthansa and SWISS First Class ground experience remains one of the reasons I enjoy flying these carriers so much. The lounges are an integral part of the First Class experience. Allowing two adult guests plus children under 18 makes the policy simpler and more flexible without fundamentally changing the exclusivity of these lounges.

I like this change.
