Why I Rate Qatar Airways Best for Onboard Dining

Matthew Klint Posted onAugust 12, 2017November 14, 2023 6 Comments

Sometimes you find amazing meals on unexpected airlines. Rarer is a carrier that delivers a consistently superior menu: an airline where you know you will always receive a great meal. At least for me, that airline is Qatar Airways.

In case you missed my flight review, for my Meal of the Week segment this week I want to draw your attention to the meal served on an overnight Qatar Airways flight from Doha to Colombo. At 4hr15min it was a relatively short flight and it departed at 2am…not exactly dinner time.

But the meal was exceptional. First, Qatar has perfected the art of on-demand dining. Some airlines promote “dine when you want” but still serve meals directly after takeoff. Want to wait? You’re often met with hesitation at best and annoyance at worst. This has never been the case (for me at least) on Qatar Airways.

For this flight, I began with a delicious bowl of mushroom soup…brimming with flavor and served at the perfect temperature.

Next up an exceptional Arabic mezze that was not too light nor not too heavy.

The main course was exceptional…herb encrusted lamb that was just as tasty as what I would order in a restaurant. It was also cooked medium and pink in the center…greatly appreciated.

For dessert, delicious chocolate cake. Coffee, including espresso-based drinks, made to order as well.

two cups of coffee and a packet of oat crunch

And it wasn’t just this flight. I’ve never had a bad meal on Qatar Airways. It’s safe to assume with a business class meal like this on a 4hr flight in the middle of the night, you probably won’t ever go hungry on Qatar Airways.

Compare this to even Singapore Airlines first class, which serves a substantially lighter meal for departures around the same time…

CONCLUSION

I’ve had great meals on Singapore, SWISS, Turkish, and even United but I’ve also had so-so meals (and even a couple bad ones). Maybe I just haven’t flown Qatar enough, but it seems to me the menu diversity even on short regional flights present enough options to ensure you can always find something tasty.

I fly Qatar constantly and 100% agree. Their catering and meal service are phenomenal. The ease with which the crew takes specific requests and curve balls is admirable. The biryanis are to die for.

This is great to know. TK (Turkish Airlines) Business Class food has been significantly cutback and is not nearly what it used to be.

So tell Steve. I’m arranging a few award flights and I was planning on flying on Turkish to experience their business class food program. Is this personal experience? Any reviews indicating this as well?

Can’t argue with you here. I’ve never had the pleasure of flying QR in J, but even their Y meals are perfectly acceptable and a cut above most other airlines. I had a reasonably tasty chicken curry for dinner, followed by a really good apple crepe for breakfast flying IAH-DOH.
