The extraordinary incident occurred on July 8, 2026, as Trump prepared to leave Ankara, Turkey after attending the NATO Summit.

We knew at the time that something unusual was going on.

Trump had flown to Turkey aboard the new Boeing 747-8 donated by Qatar and recently placed into presidential service. But as tensions with Iran suddenly escalated, Trump announced that he would fly from Ankara to RAF Mildenhall in England aboard one of the older VC-25A aircraft traditionally used as Air Force One.

At the time, that aircraft swap raised eyebrows. We now know that even the old Air Force One was apparently part of the ruse.

According to an extraordinary account confirmed by Reuters, Trump publicly boarded the familiar blue-and-white Boeing 747 in Ankara, just as everyone expected.

But he didn’t stay aboard.

Instead, once out of public view, Trump was secretly moved off the aircraft in a DO & CO catering truck. The truck carried him across the airfield to a smaller U.S. Air Force C-32A, the military version of the Boeing 757-200 often used by the Vice President, Secretary of State, First Lady, and occasionally the President.

That aircraft quietly departed Turkey with Trump aboard.

Meanwhile, the big blue-and-white Air Force One departed as well.

With journalists and White House personnel onboard…but without the President.

Wow.

A Remarkable Presidential Shell Game

The entire operation was designed to convince anyone watching that Trump was aboard the obvious target.

And apparently, it worked.

Trump had been seen boarding the VC-25A. The press corps was aboard, as were White House staff members. The aircraft departed Ankara and flew toward Britain just as anyone monitoring presidential movements would have expected.

But the President of the United States was actually somewhere else in the sky aboard a comparatively anonymous Boeing 757.

The two aircraft ultimately arrived at RAF Mildenhall only minutes apart.

Staggering, isn’t it?

We often talk about Air Force One as if the aircraft itself is some sort of impenetrable flying fortress. And certainly the VC-25A incorporates defensive systems, hardened communications, and capabilities far beyond anything found on a commercial 747.

But the best defense against an enemy trying to shoot down the President’s airplane may simply be making sure the enemy doesn’t know which airplane the President is actually on.

That’s precisely what happened here.

Was it paranoia? CBS News reported that U.S. officials had received intelligence concerning a credible Iranian threat against Trump and allied proxy groups, including concern over an attempt to target his aircraft with a missile.

That puts the almost comical image of Trump being driven around an airport inside a catering vehicle into a very different perspective… this was deadly serious.

But What About Everyone On The Decoy Air Force One?

But the decoy aircraft was not empty.

Members of the White House press corps and at least some White House personnel reportedly flew aboard the VC-25A while believing Trump was also onboard.

Presumably, whatever intelligence U.S. officials possessed allowed security professionals to conclude this could be done safely (at least I hope…). We don’t know the details of the threat, nor should we expect the Secret Service or military to reveal them.

But think about the logic of a decoy for a moment.

For the deception to work, anyone potentially targeting Trump had to believe he was aboard that aircraft.

That’s rather unsettling if you’re one of the people actually sitting on it!

Perhaps U.S. intelligence knew enough about the nature, location, or timing of the threat to determine there was no danger once the aircraft left Turkish airspace. Perhaps there were other protective measures in place that remain classified. There are plenty of possibilities.

Still, I would love to know what the journalists aboard that aircraft thought when they eventually learned that the President they believed was flying with them had quietly vanished in a catering truck before departure.

That would certainly be a memorable trip report…

The Strange Air Force One Story Gets Even Stranger

This episode also adds another bizarre chapter to the saga of Trump’s new Air Force One.

The President had arrived in Ankara aboard the Boeing 747-8 originally owned by Qatar and transferred to the United States for presidential use.

But when the Iranian threat intensified, he did not use it to leave Turkey.

Instead, Trump publicly switched to the older VC-25A and then, as we now know, secretly switched yet again to the C-32A.

The security capabilities of the Qatari aircraft had already become a subject of controversy. Reporting after the Turkey trip indicated that the newer aircraft did not yet possess all of the defensive countermeasures found aboard the older presidential 747s.

Trump subsequently announced that the aircraft would temporarily leave service to be “maxed out” with additional upgrades.

Whatever your view of the decision to accept and rapidly convert the Qatari 747, the events in Ankara demonstrate why the defensive equipment carried aboard presidential aircraft is not superfluous.

There are governments and terrorist organizations in this world that would very much like to kill the President of the United States.

And Iran has hardly been coy about its hostility toward Trump.

There is also precedent for this sort of deception.

In 2000, President Bill Clinton secretly flew into Pakistan aboard an unmarked Gulfstream while another aircraft operated as a decoy. Presidential movements into dangerous environments have long involved secrecy, misdirection, and multiple aircraft.

But the mechanics of this operation are particularly remarkable..

CONCLUSION

I’m fascinated by presidential aviation, but this episode transcends the usual discussion of liveries, cabins, and which airplane deserves to be in the Air Force One fleet.

The United States received intelligence indicating that Iran posed a credible threat to the President’s aircraft, and the response was an elaborate deception operation that included two presidential aircraft, a covert C-32A flight, a press corps that apparently had no idea what was happening, and Donald Trump being spirited across an airport inside a catering truck.

Wow, just wow.

At least the POTUS had good taste in caterers, with DO & CO well-known as the best of the best. 😉
