Cheeseburger Returns On United Airlines! (Plus Other Fresh Food For Sale In Economy Class)

Matthew Klint Posted onSeptember 1, 2021November 14, 2023 16 Comments

After more than a year and a half, United Airlines is bringing back fresh food for purchase in economy class, including its beloved cheeseburger.

United Airlines Restores Fresh Food For Purchase In Economy Class, Including Cheeseburger

Starting on September 15th, fresh meals will again be available for purchase on United Airlines. Initially, this service will be available on most domestic flights over 1,500 miles.

Choices will include:

Breakfast

  • Chia Seed Pudding – topped with fresh mango and toasted coconut
  • Bacon, Egg and Cheese Croissant Sandwich – bacon, fried egg and cheddar on a butter spiral croissant

The croissant sandwich appears to the same sandwich that is served in first class on non hub-hub flights under 1,500 miles.

Lunch/Dinner

  • Mediterranean Grain Bowl – bulgur, black lentil and carrot salad, roasted zucchini and bell peppers, served with lemon vinaigrette
  • Cheeseburger – cheeseburger with cheddar and pickles on a buttered brioche bun
  • Fresh Cheese Tray – featuring Cheddar, Gouda, Colby Jack and Monterey Jack cheeses, along with crackers and dried cherry and almond mix

The fresh items will be offered in addition to United’s assortment of snack boxes and a la carte items.

Although often classified as “domestic” for catering purposes, the fresh food will not be available for purchase on flights to Latin America, Canada and Guam. Furthermore, it will not be available on longhaul Hawaii flights where customers are already served meals in economy cabins.

Those Hawaiian meals, by the way, look mighty tasty:

Pricing has not been announced on the new menu items, but I would guess each item will cost between $9-13. 1K members will be eligible for a free food item (plus free alcoholic drink) on flights in which these new meals are sold, if their upgrade does not clear.

CONCLUSION

It is great to see United Airlines restore hot meals for purchase and I am particularly happy to see the cheeseburger back, which is “the most chosen meal on United” according to Toby Enqvist, United’s Chief Customer Officer.

The move marks one step closer to restoring airline service to pre-pandemic levels.

Think of all the missed revenue by not offering meals for sale the last 9 months. Full planes with hungry domestic pax as many airport concessions are still closed or understaffed. They could have made a killing!

@ Matthew — Looks tasty? Well, at least you are easy to satisfy. 🙂

Great news and we’re back to the “coach better food than first” conundrum

Nice to see they pushed back on the union and are getting this important part of saving fliers time back!

Umm, no. And it does not look like that in reality, lol. I’ll just grab a Five Guys before, thank you.

of course it doesn’t “actually” look like that, but which hamburger actually does look the same a pictured? it is definitely tasty though, I’m with Matthew on that one.

Good news and good for UA! The cheeseburger was surprisingly good.

The burger American previously served in FC was without a doubt the worst Burger in America. The roll was filled with grease and impossible to pickup. The Turkey Pastrami or Pimento Cheese sandwich choice is garbage, but nothing was as bad as the burger.

Are they changing the first class meals at all? I am so sick of the cheese enchilada or chicken. Not that either of them are bad but I’ve had them each 10 times.

Is it possible to get these new buy on board items if you’re in first class? And if so would they charge for it or give it free?

No change to first class menu. We will see if we are allowed to swap—I’d say likely yes.

I’ve had success asking if I could have a different choice from the back before, when in first class on United, but I can’t remember if it was a fresh meal like this or snack boxes only? I was also 1k at the time so maybe that figured into it?

I’ll definitely be asking for Y food, especially if the F menus stay the same for another few months. I appreciate the return to meals in F, but it’s time to rotate the mains.
